I love these books because they are very real. The characters are well rounded, colourful and varied. They are the sort of people you would genuinely expect to be part of a police unit and I've become fond of them all, especially Ted Darling and his life partner, Trev. There are other great characters, though: Bizzie, the pathologist, the Ice Queen, Jim Baker, Annie - they all provide a rich backcloth that give these books great depth. What I like even more is the fact that despite the villains being very nasty indeed, Ms Krier focuses her attention on what motivates the crime, rather than how it is performed. There's plenty of blood, knives and guns, but it's not described in too much gory detail. I wouldn't call these cosy murder mysteries at all, but the mindset of the criminal and the police officers, especially that of the thoughtful and endearing D I Darling are more important. This book is a riveting page turner, and I was almost sick with anxiety as the climactic ending approached. Another excellent read from Ms Krier. Now I'm looking forward to reading the next one! In fact I have to after this ending!
Ted Darling - getting more interesting with every book - takes on the investigation into tracking down the perpetrator, the crime this time touching on the sad and appalling business of puppy mills and animal abuse. As an animal advocate, I think the writer is to be commended for including this aspect.
A darned good read again.
