Shuttle Mission Control: Flight Controller Stories and Photos, 1981-1992 [Print Replica] Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 10 ratings

NASA’s flight control teams work diligently during every flight to safeguard spacecraft and their crews, but few people appreciate the significance of their contributions to the American Space Program. Shuttle Mission Control: Flight Controller Stories and Photos, 1981-1992, showcases twenty first-person accounts of Space Shuttle controllers solving problems from dangerous pressure readings to slippery satellites. The decisions made and actions taken by these unsung heroes, many recognized with the honor of hanging the mission patch, epitomize the motto of Mission Control, “Achievement through Excellence.” Flight controller rosters and honorees plus an acronym list and index are included.

Extremely valuable space history!

Extremely valuable space history!
It is no exaggeration that Marianne Dyson has produced an historically significant document with “Space Shuttle Mission Control: Flight Controller Stories and Photos, 1981-1992.” She has preserved space history that would have been lost forever! As soon as I saw this book was published, I ordered it. I was at NASA-Johnson Space Center supporting several of the missions she wrote about. I was there so this is personal! I write my own stories, but I needed the details she provided since I wasn’t a space shuttle flight controller. I worked with them on console intermittently as software engineering support, so I didn’t have the complete picture. Dyson was a certified flight controller and was in the middle of history. She is also space history and an excellent writer to convey a highly technical subject into human stories. I cannot praise this book enough!

For perspective, I have worked decades as an engineer with NASA as my ultimate customer, most recently assembling and operating the International Space Station. In all that time I had only one occasion to get into one of the Building 30’s mission control rooms, and it was during a Shuttle mission but nothing dramatic was going on. So it’s really true that you need an insider like the author of this book to know what goes on in that building. I have also been on the comm nets during Shuttle missions, just listening. This book satisfyingly expands on those memories and lets us in on the real drama that usually develops when you’re trying to accomplish brand-new difficult things like spaceflight.

I've known Marianne Dyson for a number of years, and I've followed her writing all that time. Shuttle Mission Control is a fine work that will provide invaluable reference to future historians and science fiction writers, as well as real entertainment and interest for the rest of us! If you want to go "behind the scenes" at Mission Control in a critical period of time, this is the book for you. Highly recommended!

Wonderful photos and stories about the Space Shuttle program. Friends and family members worked for the entire Shuttle program, and can vouch for its accuracy. Completely fascinating inside look at one of the world’s most successful space ventures.
