Rip off/expired/dont do it

I should have read the other one star reviews. I am really kicking myself. There is no expiration date on the label as you can see from all the photos of every angle, unless its covered by the English writing. Hence theres no way to know if its still good or not.

The paste was disgusting. It smells like its been sitting on a shelf for quite some time. Stale. I decided to still give it a shot and made mapo tofu. What a mistake. Had to throw out the whole batch because of how gross it was. And I really love mapo tofu so that tells you something, I would eat fresh mapo off the floor because I love it so much, but this stuff? Nah man. Nope. It was foul. This was clearly expired doubanjang being passed off for fresh. I imagine I was sold the exact same stock the other one star reviewers indicated was expired. Yay me. Don't be dumb like me. Save yourselves.

I love ma mapo tofu. I was buying a similar item from uwajamaya (prominent Asian grocery in Seattle) until they stopped carrying it for some reason. I saw this on amazon, and yes, balked at the $15 price tag for such a small amount, but I was desperate. Well... this is not the same at all. Yes it has the red oil, and it’s made from broad beans, but it also contains multitudes of what I would describe as “shards” of red pepper skins, some an inch long! These are the hard outer cover of red peppers used in production for the sauce. I got one stuck in my throat for 3 hours. I’m spitting out pieces of this stuff as I eat what is supposed to be a very smooth, comforting dish. Avoid!

This was my first time using anything like this product, and I made a simple authentic Chinese recipe with it called "Ma Yi Shang Shu", or "Ant's Climbing a Tree"... which was a ground pork and bean thread noodle recipe. I absolutely loved it. The pepper flakes you would occasionally get were the spiciest part of it, but it was not extremely spicy which was good in my book. About made me sweat, but very good and delicious. Would recommend trying it!

What do add to all of the other 5 star reviews? It deserves 6 stars. The wonderful fermented bean flavor and a good amount of heat. Hell, in a pinch, add a dollop to some freshly steamed rice and you have a snack/meal. Amazingly good! This paste will be a permanent part of my pantry! Sooo good!

I have been using Lee Kum Kee brand Dobanjan paste for Mapo Tofu and really love it. But I thought I'd level up to something more authentic. I open the jar - it had great rich scent and nice fresh look to it. But when I took a small spoonful to taste, I was greeted with the crunch of sandy rock in my mouth. That same sensation when you've gotten a rock in beans that haven't been washed well. OK, well I'm still going to cook with it after carefully inspecting but I'm a little suspect at the value of this now. Not to mention it has a crazy amount of sodium in it which will only increase when I add dark soy sauce to make the sauce. Like a lot of my family I suspect that I might end up loving it theoretically, but not really liking or enjoying it very much.
