The Sickness: Monte's Story by Jeannie Rae was an okay rendition of Z-Day. The star of this story is a 16 yr. old girl who, pretty much, got on my nerves. There are times when you need to stay quiet, and there are times when you need to speak up. It was quite obvious that Monte never learned that. It may be just me who felt this way after reading this book, but it is one of the reasons why my rating is so low. However, it was the story's ending that really upset me. You will just have to read this short story to find out what I mean.

Just finished reading this story and while it was a good read,it wasn't a great read.Left me feeling kind of flat and with a lot of unanswered questions, like how did this all come about?, and why didn't Monte grab the vaccine when she got back on her bike?(I realise she's only 16 and had other things on her mind, but come on,"IT'S A VACCINE".)I know there is a sequel that explains some of the questions, but i feel it should have been added to the first book,as it would have kept the story flowing.Liked the twist at the end where Monte turned, because i wasn't expecting that.It was good to have a different ending from the norm,i liked that. All said and done, this was a good read and i'm sure a lot of people out there will like it a lot,but for me it's "3 STARS"(Sorry Jeannie Rae).

This was an excellent story! Besides the great story line the writing was excellent! Just right! I think short stories are more difficult for the author in some ways such as getting a lot of information across with less words. Rae has done so expertly! I felt like I knew the characters well enough to be invested in their survival and what was happening to them. I had a very good sense of the town and the people in it, even the atmosphere was a palpable presence, Good story. Good writing.

This short story kind of tells the story of the beginning of an outbreak of zombie virus, from the view point of a lower middle class 16 year old girl. While I have never been one of those, I raised 2 of them, and thought she was not self centered enough for a 16 year-old girl, but then mine were never chased by a bunch of zombies that wanted to eat them alive.
I found it to be a very interesting story with pretty good character development. I may read some more of Ms Rae's books.

I like this story! Monte is a formidable young gal whose bound and determined to save herself. Just because she's a 16-year-old kid, don't count her out!
The story is carefully thought out along with being nicely worded. Jeannie Rae did an excellent job in making me feel Monte's anxiety and fear!

What is with all the commas and all the dashes? I would suggest a proof reader but that hasn't helped the work of other zombie book writers at all. The story is a little different than most others of the genre. The safety glass in modern cars does not leave sharp shards that cut flesh when it is broken. The writer needs to find an educated person to help her write.

This was a short story that had a pretty basic premise that had been done a few times over in other works but this one made it interesting.
***SPOILERS*** ***SPOILERS*** ***SPOILERS***
There are a lot of cliché's in this story, like the main character running into the one person who is carrying the cure of this disease, the main character having a dream they are left behind by everyone else and the zombies get them, the military setting up a blockade and keeping the civilians inside the affected area and threatening to shoot them if they leave. They've all been done before, but this author kept the clichés toned down so he wasn't bashing us over the head with them.
There are a few grammar and spelling mistakes in the book and they distract from the story. Plus there are no page numbers which is also annoying to me.
The main character Monte calls one of the soldiers guarding the civilians "Lieutenant Lunatic." However I kind of doubt the military has a lieutenant pulling guard duty. Also when Monte approaches the military blockade at first they point their weapons at her and insist she turn back or they will fire. But then they let her through with pretty much the following argument: "Awww, come on please!?!"
On top of that, once she's in the military encampment, you'd think she'd mention to somebody, "Hey, there was this scientist lady carrying a bag of medical stuff that cured my zombie disease that she dropped like a few miles back. If you hurry you might be able to secure this cure and save everyone!" She seriously didn't think sharing that information would be a good idea?
***END SPOILERS*** ***END SPOILERS*** ***END SPOILERS***
But all in all the story is good, it has a young woman yearning to leave home and be independent and when she finally does obtain what she wants, it is a double-edged sword. She is on her own, but all her family is dead. She is someone you can really root for, the story is engaging and it keeps you interested all the way through. This is definitely worth checking out.

Ya, same old same old. Nothing unique; just another zombie story. Rated better than one star since I was interested enough to finish reading it; than again I may have just been bored enough to waste the time.

A Twisty, Turny Thing

For a short story, you really get an insight into the main character's motivation and the events that shape(d) her actions and decisions.
A fast-moving plot helps Monte's tale unfold; the question is, 'will she get out alive?'
The only downside to this story is that it needs a good edit to eradicate errant grammar and punctuation. There is a fair amount that needs the old red pen, and, at times, those errors do throw the reader off the pace.

The writing style was good and I could have enjoyed it but for one thing. First person narration in all its many guises is a real turn off for me. I tried but simply could not get further than about thirty pages. For people who like this particular style I'm sure they'll enjoy it for the content is good. Not for me I'm afraid.

A good read with decent pace but way to short and is not really a stand alone book as the conclusion is......buy the next one. That said i didnt notice typos or missing words that usually plague(haha) self published book. Enjoyable non the less and it was free. Thanks J Rar

Though enjoying this read I felt this book came to an end too quick . I bought the next one and expected Monte`s story to continue. But it didn't..still had me hooked though and will continue to read this author`s books.

I chose this book as it was free and I was off ill. It has parts where I don't want to read but I stuck with it and I am glad I did. It was an amazing book but I wish there was mire to Monte's story... It does leave you on a cliff hanger but it was a darn good one!
