This game works with XP but when trying to load it on Windows 7 it doesn't work. Windows 7 reports it to be "incompatible."
UPDATE: Here's how to make it work in Windows 7 (even 64 bit):
Look for a windows update named KB3086255. Uninstall it. Then install Civilization by opening the installation disk, find Setup.exe, right click "Run as Administrator." That's it, it's all you have to do.
"MS15-097: Description of the security update for the graphics component in Windows: September 8, 2015 KB3086255
"This update basically disables secdrv.sys which is an anti-piracy copy protection that is used by many games developers and some other software companies. The driver, secdrv.sys, is used by games which use Macrovision SafeDisc. Without the driver, games with SafeDisc protection would be unable to play on Windows.
There have been many security issues with it over the years and Microsoft decided not to allow it to run or be installed at all in windows 10"
As a side note, I really appreciated the Civilopedia included in the game. Between turns or whenever, you can read a bit of real-world history on any of the technologies, civilization, super buildings, units, and wonders. And they have Leonard Nimoy as the narrator for the game. I plan to never get rid of this timeless game.
I preordered, and received a game that didn't work properly on my 2 year old Fujitsu laptop. The first patch installed and gave me the message "Civ IV will not run on your computer," but it did.
This is the best Civ by far. The 3d graphics allow you to zoom from outerspace to street level. Move over the beach, and you hear the ocean. Move over the woods, you hear birds singing.
Religion adds a level of complication. You can have multiple religions, or watch a single religion moves across your country.
Military units receive special abilities. It's much harder to conquer other civilization's, and most players will learn Bismark's old maxim of "limited war."
"Civics" allow you to mingle elements of social, religious, and governmental concepts in your nation.
The mouse context "passover" almost replaces the need for any written reference as nearly everything on the map has a context box.
The "great people" concept is fascinating, as you'll find yourself scrambling to a reference to find out who these people were.
The negatives: ponderous in later time periods as units multiply, diplomacy is still somewhat limited, and if your looking for constant action you'll be disappointed as this Civ is directed away from constant war more than the other 3 games.
The best of all the Civilization series.

I would recommend it for young and older teenagers looking for something with more substance and less pointless violence. Weapon development and war strategy are also important parts of this game as the user establishes their own territory and must compete or align themselves with other world powers of the time. Beginner to advanced levels as well as other variables are chosen at the start of the game which keep it interesting and entertaining for a long time.
