Love Me some Thomas Newman music....

I liked this movie, but I really liked the music. I knew that Thomas Newman had done the music before I saw his name on the screen. His music is recognizable and yet it is different for each movie he does. He can do orchestral like "Shawshank" or he can go really off the path like "Erin Brockovich". I just really love his music and this score goes perfect in my Thomas Newman collection. Buy it and you won't be disappointed.

I can see using this music for atmosphere if you're making a spooky movie, but it's just dead boring for listening. The music comes in little spurts, not full songs. Whatever you're buying this for, there are better choices. Not recommended.

This is one of Thomas Newman's "electronic" soundtracks relying on a range of unusual instruments, rather than orchestral pieces. The music is soothing and at times almost hypnotic/trance-like, yet has quite a foreboding feel at the same time, which is in keeping with the nature of the film. There are no particularly outstanding tracks here, but no duds either- the soundtrack is atmsopheric throughout.

Newcomers to Newman's work are better off trying out one of his best efforts such as Meet Joe Black, Road to Perdition and/or American Beauty, but I can recommend Side Effects to established fans of the composer.

Thomas Newman ist bekannt für alle Arten von Filmmusik. Ob modern mit Elektronik bei James Bond, oder mit allerlei verschiedenen Instrumenten bei American Beauty, sogar klassisch mit großem Orchester bei Meet Joe Black - Newman kann jede Art von Musik zu einem Film beisteuern. Side Effects oder auch auf Deutsch Tödliche Nebendwirkungen verlangt sicher nicht nach großem Orchester, dieses wird man hier auch nicht finden. Das Resultat ist auf seine Art ein typischer Newman mit einem beispiel wie exotische Klangwelten doch ausgezeichnet funktionieren können.

Die Komposition verfolgt keinen thematischen Abläufen sondern ist sehr athomspärisch gehalten, trotzdem finden sich immer wieder wunderschöne Melodien in der Musik. " Verry Sick Girl " ist der Main Title des Albums und zeigt gleich den Weg, mysteriöse Klänge von verschiedenen exotischen Instrumenten verströhmen eine geheimnisvolle Stimmung und sind gleichzeitig schaurig schön. " Relavativity " ist ein sehr süßes Stück was sehr an ein Glockenspiel für Kinder erinnert und wo nur im Hintergrund ein morbider Unterton mitschwingt. Eine Gitarre ist in vielen Tracks vertreten, aber nur dezent und sehr monoton eingesetzt. Das Klandbild im allgemeinen ist sparsarm gehalten, bis hin zum Minimalismus " Knife ".

Mehr als nur eine Hand voll Tracks sind trotz ihrer eigenwilligen Art absolut Hörenswert und zeigen die ganze Klasse des Komponisten. Obwohl ganz anders als zum Beispiel American Beauty, ist dieser Soundtrack ähnlich von der Art - exotische Instrumente performen verschiedene Melodien und Rythmen. " Take back Tomorrow " erinnert speziell am Anfang sehr stark an den berühmten Score von Newman

Trotz der spartanischen herangehensweise hat die Musik immer etwas hypnotisierendes und man bleibt immer gespannt dabei. Wie von Newman gewohnt sind die meisten Tracks sehr kurz gehalten und obwohl der Stoff insgesamt Dunkel ist und auch nicht immer einfach verliert das Album nie seine schöne Seite. In machen Stücken werden sparsam Effekte mit eingebaut diese Unterstützen die Stimmung aber sehr gut.

Fazit: Mysteriös und spartanisch gehalten ist dieses Album doch sehr interessant. Thomas Newman komponiert mit wenigen Mitteln eine wunderschöne Klangwelt und kleine Melodien von unverkennbarer Brillianz. Trotz viel gutem bei diesem Album ist es kein Meisterwerk und geht in manchen Momenten zuviel ins Underscoring und experimentieren. Trotzdem ein insgesamt gutes Werk und eine Empfehlung.

ルーニー・マーラ＆チャニング・テイタム主演、スティーブン・ソダーバーグ監督"Side Effects"のサントラ。
同じソダーバーグ監督の『コンテイジョン』に良く似た現代音楽ですが、作曲はクリフ・マルチネスではなく、『スカイフォール』のトーマス・ニューマン。

『スカイフォール』の音楽とはまるで異なりますが、映像と合わさることで真価を発揮する、映像に寄り添おうとする＝サントラ単体では評価しにくいと言う意味では『スカイフォール』に酷似しています。
職人技の境地に踏み込もうとしているトーマス・ニューマンの異才ぶり。
映画としては堪能できるのですが、サントラとしては堪能できない。
職人技の境地。不思議な境地です。

しかしながら『スカイフォール』のように強いメリハリがある映画ではなく、不安が少しずつ忍び寄っていく映画なので、サントラ単体で聴き流しても全体像を掴みやすい。聴き易いサントラだとは思います。
女性コーラスの綺麗な旋律をさりげなく加える、そこがクリフ・マルチネスとの違いであり、トーマス・ニューマンが本作に起用された理由だと思います。
マルチネスの『コンテイジョン』や『トラフィック』などと聴き比べてみるのも面白いかもしれません。

スコア＋劇中曲1曲の計18曲。
劇中曲はルーニー・マーラ演じるヒロインが部屋で大音量でかけるシーベリー・コーポレーションの"The Forgotten People"。
アルバム Radio Retaliation (Dig) にも収録されています。
こちらもオススメです。
