"What do all 12 of these passengers have in common? May 12 New York (AP): A Skyway Airlines flight carrying 375 passengers and 13 crew bound for Rome’s Fiumicino airport from New York’s JFK International Airport has disappeared off the radar overnight according to airline spokespersons. Skyway Flight 12 had left New York at 12:00 midnight Monday evening and was said to be operating normally and in good weather conditions. According to sources on the ground, the plane, a Boeing 767, was piloted by an experienced flight crew who issued no alarm of any kind prior to vanishing somewhere over the Atlantic ocean east of Newfoundland. The 767 is said to be a reliable twin engine carrier that’s been in service since 1982 with an excellent safety record. While a catastrophic mechanical failure is presently being investigated, says an FAA spokesman, a criminal event is not being ruled out. Both sea and air rescue crews have been dispatched from the US, Canada, Newfoundland, and Ireland. This is a developing story.
So, thriller fans, it’s time. Fasten your safety belts. Return your seat backs and tray tables to their full upright and locked position. Review the safety information card in your seatback pocket once more before take off. Ready? Here we go! Enjoy the ride on each of the 12 books in the exciting new series where Flight 12 Begins."
That led me to believe that the book would be almost ENTIRELY about the passengers on the Flight. It is NOT. Don't get me wrong. It's a great book. But it seems as though it was a book that had been completely written and then a small postscript thrown in AFTER the author had been contacted about doing this project. That's why I feel cheated. I feel it was a gimmick to get more readers drawn in to their series. Which is okay. IF they had been upfront about it. They also said on the Flight 12 website that it was going to be a limited time thing so you had to get the books while you could since the books might not be around and available much longer. So I bought them when I really couldn't afford to thinking I might not be able to get them and might not find out what happened on the Flight only to find out that the only book that was actually really about the Flight was the last one (other than a tiny blurb in each book which really wouldn't have mattered if you didn't read them and only read the last book)! I ended up paying over $30 for all of the books (a couple were free and some were only $.99) when I could have only spent $2.99 for the last book and still found out everything about the Flight without reading the other 12 books. What a total rip-off!
Browne’s main protagonist, Nick Jennings is one of those lifelong residents of Vegas who succumbed to the temptations of gambling after several life altering events put his life in a tailspin. Four years earlier Jennings and his wife, Cassandra, were Las Vegas detectives and tragic events led to Nick’s falling from grace, losing his job and his wife divorcing him. The author shares Jennings’ backstory with his readers leading up to Nick’s efforts to respond to a request from his ex-wife, Cassandra, to try and help a young woman find her missing husband.
Readers quickly learn the circumstances and events of the husband’s disappearance. Nick is not a licensed PI in Vegas so all of his searching for the missing husband is an off the books investigation. While Nick searches for the missing husband, following clues taking him to a bar run by the Russian mob. Readers are Nick’s shadow as he questions the Russians about the whereabouts of woman’s missing husband. The author shares the Russian Mob’s involvement in illegal gambling, fight clubs, and human trafficking. The pace of Brown’s thriller seems to speed up each at step of Nick’s investigation. Regardless of Nick’s intentions, his efforts create trouble for everyone and angers his ex-wife. Suspense and intrigue build to a climax when a series of unpredictable events in an abandoned warehouse creates a dangerous climate for Nick and those around him. The author delivers a surprising ending to his story that effect everyone including Browne’s passenger on the Skyway flight to Rome. Readers will never guess how events in Vegas in Browne’s NICK JENNINGS THRILLER set in motion who boards, Skyway Airway’s Flight 12 midnight flight to Rome. The author keeps readers on the edge of their seats to the very last page.
