DO NOT INSERT THIS DEVICE INTO YOUR LAPTOP WITHOUT READING THIS IN FULL.

Although it says AT&T in the add on Amazon, my unit had ROGERS (CANADA) self-installing software inside the USB modem, and the modem was trying to go out over the internet to download and install the latest ROGERS ISP client software and modem firmware updates from the Canadian carrier.

To get around this, download and install the latest AT&T Communications Manager FIRST, then insert this device into your laptop. I use an MBR1000 access point, so I had to install this onto my laptop first. If you are using a mobile router, it will work fine, just disable 'automatic modem firmware updates' over internet.

Mine has been operating for about a month on AT&T with no problems.

>>>> UPDATE: JUNE 13,2012 <<<<

This 313U modem is now virtually worthless, if you are an AT&T customer. This device will NOT take AT&T firmware updates (6-14-2012), and AT&T refuses to give you anything higher than 2G if you even try to upgrade your SIM card on a grandfathered account. This unit CANNOT be used with LTE (here in Fort Lauderdale, Florida), and AT&T will not even put you through to data customer service if you give then your IMEI number. AT&T states that it is NOT on their "approved list."

The only way to keep this thing working, at least for the time being, is to use an old SIM card, and don't tell AT&T that you have the darn thing. At least you still have an uncapped, grandfathered account, but this modem won't take updates, possibly because of the unlock hack. If you live near an AT&T LTE cell tower, be prepared for constant disconnects as soon as they fire up the 700 MHz band in your area.

I had the ATT Sierra Wireless modem shockwave 308U series which was a bridge between 3G & 4G.

This new modem 313U is 4G-LTE generation. Seams to be about 40% faster.

I 'm in a rural area with low/poor coverage.
I got 3-4 bars with my new modem and only 1-2 bars signal with old modem on a good day.

Works perfectly for me using a 13" mid-2012 MacBook Pro (non-retina) and OS X 10.8.3. That was AFTER installing and updating the version of AT&T Communication Manager software included on the device. It didn't work with the original version of Communication Manager that shipped with it... my MacBook Pro couldn't detect the communication part of the device... only the built-in USB mass storage part. Obviously I needed a different Internet connection to update the AT&T software (over WiFi). Once up and running, it ROCKS. The AT&T Communication Manager software works well too.

Note that if you don't already have a data plan and SIM card from AT&T, you'll need to stop by a local AT&T owned store to obtain them. A data plan and SIM is not included with the purchase of this device.

Because it's unlocked, this device can also be used with SIM cards and data plans from other wireless carriers compatible with the frequencies it covers... such as T-Mobile in some areas.

Intro...

I recently purchased the Momentum 4G (LTE) to upgrade my Shockwave 4G (HSPA+) without having to start my contract over with AT&T. Upon doing some research initially, I saw many decent reviews on the Momentum 4G. Most of the complaints seemed to be more about the service, rather than the device itself. The main reason that I bought the Momentum, however, was because I got it for $150 less than what AT&T charges (no contract). I wasn't expecting much for the price, however I was decently surprised when comparing speeds with my Shockwave dongle.

Initial Setup...

I was expecting a decent amount of configurations and/or troubleshooting for LTE, as I planned on using the USB dongle with my Cradlepoint mobile router. My previous dongle required some configurations within the Cradlepoint modem settings in order for it to work at all. Surprisingly, I didn't have to touch anything in order for LTE to work. Using the same modem settings as before, I was receiving LTE speeds immediately! The Momentum uses a standard sized SIM card, so there were no modifications needed. I read that some users had to get a new SIM card from AT&T in order for LTE to work, however I presume this would only be for users with 3+ year old devices. One thing that I'd like to note is that there weren't any inscriptions on the SIM card holder for the direction you need to put the card in. Due to this, it didn't work initially, and I figured out that I had put the SIM card in backwards. I also tried setup directly on my computer. The USB dongle comes with the AT&T Communication Manager software built-in, so when you plug in the device it will automatically start the install process.

I have only tried one other laptop connect card. But I did do a lot of research as the one that I had previously also worked great for me but was being discontinued. This newer Sierra wireless Momentum 4G has got to be one of the best out there. I have a MacBook Pro and used to get Wi-Fi in my apt but moved to a much more remote location. My plan is with AT&T and I use it for both business and personal. I have been using it for almost 5 months now.

PROS: Laptop connect is great not just because if plugs directly into your USB port but this one also comes with a USB connectivity transfer cable so that you can plug the cable into the USB port, then the connect card into the cable and attach it to the top of your computer screen or somewhere else if you do not want it sticking out the side of your laptop, etc. Unlike some that just stick strait out and can get bumped or caught on something when you get up to move or you are in close quarters sitting next to people (plane trips) you can better protect the device if needed. This particualar model also has a hinge at the connection site so you can bend it up and not have it sticking out that way (usually what I do).

4G. Very fast. I am in a remote location that doesn't get 4G but the 3G is still very impressive and when I am traveling or in a large city I can get 4G instantly whenever available.

Works well even in a moving car.

Global Compatability in over 200 countries.

Just as great on a Mac as a PC.

Wi-Fi Capable.

Has a blinking light signal that will tell you when the signal is searching and turn blue once connected.

Sierra (maker of the device) customer support is FANTASTIC.
