Never seen Esquivel's Vegas show? This is as close as you can come without video. This is a "live" rendition of part of his usual show. The fact that the group pulls it all off with no overdubs and supposedly (ala direct disk recordings) in a single take is a true testament to that known fact that Esquivel demanded perfection from his troops. This is a cool slice of entertainment, terrific musicians at the top of their games and unlike any show you are likely to see/hear anytime soon. A must have for the Esquivel fan.

This recording of a live performance is very uncharacteristic of Esquivel's usual output. He works with a very tiny ensemble and two female singers, and so the result is nothing like the LPs he released in the 1960s.

This is the first Esquivel album I've ever heard. Found the CD in a thrift shop for a buck... which must be sort of a tradition by now, isn't it?

I'm really not sure how much I should say, aside from the following:

-- The music is performed NOT in a Chicago nightclub, but in a recording studio, with 'applause' obviously dubbed in; the (rather entertaining) liner notes acknowledge this, but you can also tell just by the sound of it.

-- What Esquivel describes as his own original composition, "La Mantilla", is a direct lift from Chick Corea's "La Fiesta".

-- As mentioned in another review, his accompaniment here is somewhat stripped-down-- just organ, bass, drums, percussion, and female vocalists-- so the arrangements aren't 'wild' and 'exotic' but often 'interesting'.

-- If you've always wanted to hear a small wedding band play the Tanya Tucker vehicle "Delta Dawn" in a nearly-funk style, with the drummer adding some muscle behind the cheezy vocals, this is probably as close as you'll ever get.

But how 'good' is this album, on the whole? Well, that's most definitely a matter of personal taste. As Liam Dunn said to Cleavon Little in "Blazing Saddles": "Son... you're on your own."
