This is a dystopian society where exploitation, death and destruction are the norm; Quinn is a slave by title but there is nothing about her that is submissive or owned..she is a conflicted murderous, sexual antiheroine with brutal powers that she cannot control or curtail and in truth it took some effort on my part to like her...enter Sovereign and his brothers; they are her aggressive, ruthless enemies and the men destined, it would appear, to become her dark and twisted captors and potential lovers..the story is told mostly from Quinn’s perspective, which helps to explain the reasons for her nature and her responses to Sovereign and the others.. as for the men, they wear their hearts on their sleeves with regards to Quinn....there is something decidedly attractive about men who are willing to go to any lengths to find and protect a woman....
There are shocking and disturbing themes in this book but it is also a twisted love story as Quinn inspires complete devotion from her would be lovers....the first tentative steps towards an eventual reverse harem have been taken....but this is a slow burner, in that respect, and what the final grouping will look like will have to wait until a later installment...this was a compelling start to this odyssey and I look forward to reading more....I received an advanced copy of this book from the author
Sigil is the broken monster that an utterly inhumane, human civilization turned her into. She was broken piece by piece and so she ripped THEM apart piece by piece. She's learned her lessons well and her mercy is both rare and monstrous. Her capture was a tense stand off to say the least. She's no wilting flower. No brave and enduring hero striving to make up for her past, for her destruction. She's the predator that pounces when you least expect. She's utterly broken and my heart breaks for the monster that swipes before she thinks.
Sovereign, the emperor of an empire that swallows worlds and spits out humans as the flotsam is perhaps the only monster that could stand up, no, DOMINATE the broken creature that is Sigil. He has and will destroy worlds, galaxies in order to make sure his consort is safe if not exactly sound. No crime, no perfidy is to tame, to heinous. He's beautiful and perhaps as broken as his reluctant consort...How insane is it that I want him and Sigil to live their happily destructive after?
Holy guacamole Addison! How did this twisted saga land in your head? Sigil may wear a crown as Sovereign's Consort but Addison Cain takes the Crown as Dark Erotica/Romance's Queen
This author's books are like an obsession when you can't put them down because you will never know just what is going to happen from chapter to chapter. I will have to buy the rest of the series for sure because it was just that well written and just that good! :-)
So in the shortest intro possible, Quinn (aka Sigil), is a super complicated slave/not slave, sex pot/cannibal, killer/saver of children. She's incredibly violent and goes into uncontrollable rages / fits of bloodlust that are incredibly difficult to come out of. But then theres Que. Que saved her, cared for her for years, turned her from the mindless violent animal he found her as into a somewhat human. They live together and sleep together in this sortof slave colony space station thing. But Quinn is, and has always been, hunted. And of course, the men find her.
What follows is twist after twist, while we simultaneously learn more of Quinn's backstory and the horrors shes been through. This. Story. Rocks.
It'll break you up, put you back together, and then crush you completely all over again. The twists are crazy but seamless and make total sense. And then all of a sudden you find thrown in there the fact that this is a RH too. Even better. Definitely dark, not quite as much as some of Addison Cain's other books but still def in that category. But I think this is 100% my favorite of her series. The story is fantastic. Loved loved loved it!

If, however, you feel you still want to be ripped off in this way, a word about the plot. Hmmm, it's questionable. If you like totally non-consensual sex, then go for it. However, the scenes in this don't just border on rape, they are rape. I would imagine it would be very triggering for some people. I also wasn't too keen on the fact Sigil herself has almost been lusted after since childhood. Her 'rescuer' Que, who picked her up as a child, nevertheless engages in sex with her once she becomes an adult - same with Sovereign. Some might say fine - she's an adult now. However, in the real/human world, most people would find it pretty distasteful if a step father suddenly started shagging a step daughter once she reached maturity, having raised her from childhood. If you're able to set all that aside, the sex itself wasn't particularly titillating or steamy. Probably due to a lack of build-up or tension between the characters. As for Sigil herself, well she was pretty vile on many levels.
I'm not going to say much more about this as I don't really want to dedicate much more time to this pile of tosh.
Oh, my Star and moon this was bloody good.
Like seriously I really couldn't get enough of this darkly sadistic depraved tale.
I'm not even sure how to start describing this madhouse of mayhem.
So this places us in a fictional fantasy landscape set in space, so its a sci-fi Yes?
Well, it sort of is but its also so much more sci-fi / Erotica / Horror / dystopian; We have a bit of everything all mashed up together to create this fantastical adventure that I honestly have nothing to compare it to.
everything that shouldn't have worked did; this author has the exceptional ability to create whole masterpieces when it comes to her world building skills.
This is something she absolutely excels at.
What she's is also a master at is giving me a story that I didn't even know I wanted never mind needed.
I am having quite a time lately with dark fiction that I am actually struggling to accept emotionally which as a result is reflecting in my final book ratings.
I am not even sure what the correct combination for myself even is so to expect anyone else to get it is a bloody long stretch, but Addison Cain seems to have punched my ticket because she gets the formula correct for me every single time.
Definite auto-buy author.
This is dark dubious material skirting the edge constantly in regards to its content.
dub-con bordering at times on non-con and I seriously devoured every depraved scenario we were given here.
Oh, Sigil.” Sovereign slid his lips over her ear. “It had to happen this way. Can you not already feel me working inside you, undoing the damage? Does it not satisfy to be mounted by your own kind? Every time we mate, you’ll know completion. You’ll chemically recognize your place until you are healed of the poison they inflicted on you to punish me.
Sigil/Quinn is a complete psychopath with very few redeeming qualities of these anomalies was her compulsion to save neglected children and provide them with an alternative (probably an understandable result of her own horrific childhood)
And her love of Que her unemotional alien companion and saviour.
Her devotion and internal gratitude to this particular individual is very apparent.
While playing the role of master and slave on the space station Pax Sigil is discovered by the very species that she has been evading for years.
With Sovereign and the brothers ready to reclaim Sigil as imperial Consort to the Irdesi empire they are willing to do whatever it takes to claim and dominate this elusive escapee.
Sigil is right back at ya and the trials and agonies she is willing to endure to evade sovereigns attentions was truly astounding.
Sovereign I'm still not sure of but I do think he generally cares in his own unique fashion and even when he does what is necessary his words still reflect his hope and blind devotion that Sigil will return his affections some day.
We left Sigil (Irdesi Empire #1) on a shocking cliffhanger that had me screaming NO!!!
Will be starting the next instalment immediately after that one; how could I not.
Before I go just a small observation Sigil, in my opinion, is one of the most crazy-ass female characters I have ever encountered.
I mean geez this girl has actually eaten people.
Quinn envisioned plucking out one of his unimaginable eyes and crushing it to jelly—or maybe eating it, swallowing down a piece of him while he watched. The fantasy blossomed, made her smile, and she slipped further into manic bloodlust.
What am I saying she was completely the bomb and I adored her crazy lab-engineered butt.
You so rock girlie.
I am really looking forward to my next Sigil fix.
This won't be one for everyone, but this one was definitely my particular brand of bad.
As an added bonus Sigil (Irdesi Empire #1) is also available through KU.
For clarification, this review is for the re-released book.
All opinions expressed here are entirely my own.
My first book by this author and it completely knocked my socks off. I refused to put the book down until I'd finished, and I was still hankering for more. The writer has an almost hypnotic style of writing (something I've now noticed in her other works) and she grabs you by the hair and yanks you down into the worlds she's created, making sure you're fully entranced before letting you go.
Sigil is dark, down and dirty sexy, and has the smooth twists and turns within the plot that keep you on your toes. It still managed to blindside me at the end (no spoilers).
Quinn is feisty, she is kickass, and yet at the heart of it, she is a woman who--when faced with an alpha male who wrests control from her--feels what every woman would. This was the perfect mixture for me as I love strong, self-assured heroines who submit and yet still have that internal fight that keeps them apart from others.
Highly recommended for anyone who likes dark dub-con/non-con which is exceptionally well written.
The relationship between Quinn and Que was touching and I thoroughly enjoyed their connection and the unusual dynamics of it.
I thought that Quinn's backstory was in depth and gave so much to the character, her personality, the way she works, it all contributed to the bigger picture that I didnt even figure out until it was happening.
Sovereign was a very interesting character, he seemed to be surrounded by an air of engima. Sovereign was hard to predict at times, but his detemination to claim Sigil and take her as his was forceful and so focused it made my blood rush and my heart start racing.
The hunt and subsequent conflict that occured was exciting and my stomach dropped as the enemies closed in. I could really feel the intensity of the situation through the words written on the page, also the thoughts and actions of the characters.
It was a wonderfully written story which captivated me and took me right to the end in a single sitting, I cant wait to read the next one in the series.
The story is unfinished. There are only two books, with the third promised years back and never completed.
So the second book takes a strong female character and neuters her. Her ESP is lobotomised. She's captured, and basically raped into submission, time after time. The main male character lies and misleads continually.
