Sigma's 17-50mm F2.8 EX DC OS HSM large-aperture standard zoom lens covers a focal length from 17mm wide angle and offers a large aperture of F2.8 throughout the entire zoom range, making it ideal for many types of photography especially portraiture and landscapes. The OS, Sigma's anti shake feature offers the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible. The OS feature allows Sony and Pentax users the option of viewing a stabilized image in the viewfinder, a feature offered only by Sigma. HSM provides fast and quiet AF. Sigma's own FLD glass elements, which have performance equal to fluorite along with two glass mold and one hybrid aspherical lens, provide excellent correction for all types of aberrations. The Super Multi-Layer coating reduces flare and ghosting. This lens boasts superior peripheral brightness and provides sharp, high contrast images even at the maximum apertures. With a minimum focusing distance of 11 inches throughout the entire zoom range and a magnification ratio of 1:5. When you need to stand ready for any photo opportunity you need a fast aperture so you can shoot in low existing light or at maximum range with a flash. This Sigma lens is perfect. With its compact size and light weight, it's a necessary addition to your camera bag

Back to the lens. I test every lens (and also lens filter) using a commercially-printed test chart and a row of colored pens placed at an angle to the focal plane. The pens provide a good idea of color rendition and reveal any "front-focus/back-focus" issues.
THIS LENS DOES AN ABSOLUTELY GREAT JOB, EVEN AT f2.8. Is it perfect? Of course not, but it is exceptional. It is as good as Sony "G" lenses. I don't have any of the pricey Sony CZ lenses to compare.
Good job on glass, Sigma. I am displeased that "OS" has been removed from the currently available 17-50. Bought my copy used on Amazon.
It is a little soft at both focal length extremes and at the fully open and fully closed apertures, but that is to be expected. In fact it looks better to me than most other lenses in this category and even better than some of the slightly more expensive lenses.
Almost imperceptible chromatic aberration makes it perfect for high contrast images. Has good contrast and quick auto focus.
(I use a Sony a77ii with this lens with none of the issues that have been reported with the older Sony model)
It's very noticeable when taking portraits where, ideally, I'd like to use the wide open aperture for focusing attention on the subject, except that this always leads to an image that's noticeably soft across the entire image (not just the corners, unfortunately).
For the money, I don't know if you can find a better lens, but the lack of sharpness at wide open has me seeking a replacement -- even if it costs more.
