    Item arrived damaged
Lens was really disappointing. The lens box came super crushed. It literally fell apart as I picked the box up. It didn't drop the lens or anything. When I took the lens out of the case. The lens hood just fall apart. The sides were broken and cracked. I thought I was ok with the lens hood damaged because It still attached to the lens. But the front lens element was broken. It honestly looked like it was damaged beforehand and someone tried to glue it back together. The lens cap wouldn't attach to the front. Not sure if the lens I got had internal issues. Focus was fast but it did lock up my A7r iii at times. Images were sortof soft. Sharp but soft. The Sigma 135 1.8 Sony e mount was a lot sharper and faster in my test.Lens wasn't as heavy as I expected it to be. It felt very light. Feels good when holding.I will definitely be returning it because of the damage. I might try to buy a different one.12/7/18 UpdateChanging my review to 4 stars. Got a new copy. After testing it af is a lot faster and lens is very sharp. Lens cap and hood fits perfectly. 1st copy I got was definitely used and had external and internal damage. It wasn't new as stated. It was also purchased from an authorized Sigma dealer. Also, if you have a 85mm lens I would recommend not getting this. The only difference between this and a 85 is like 1-2 step forward. The focal length is almost non-existent. This lens is for people who have lots of extra cash to spend.

First impression - it took 5 days for this lens to arrive and once it did.. It was like the Red Sea parted. I opened this box and was astounded by the size of this lens. It feels every little bit of the highest quality. It's not just a lens this thing is a piece of ART..

First off - it is HUGE!! and it weighs.. But the quality you will get from this is unlike any other. I will go on record and say this is the BEST sigma lens you can buy for the E-Mount. I am very impressed and you will be too. I ordered this to shoot portraits as it will be replacing my Sony 85 F1.8.

This won't be an in depth review just yet, but had to state how satisfied I am with this lens. It is huge and heavy for a 105mm, but 100% Awesome. I started testing it as soon as I opened it up. Indoor shots with auto ISO returned amazing results for just shooting around! Focus was fairly quick for glass this size, pretty accurate, and plenty sharp - Even wide open @ 1.4. With the weight of this lens, some may need to use a pod as free handing it may wear on you after a bit, but I didn't find it to be much of a problem overall. This lens should be a portrait slayer in the right hands! I've been eyeing it for a good bit, and am happy to have finally picked it up.

Over time I may update this review if any issues arise or to add sample images besides of just the lens itself!

This lens is the portrait dream I have been waiting on. A bit heavy but well worth it for portrait shoots. The blurred out backgrounds this lens renders is second to known, I guess this is why the call it the king. If you going to invest in a lens this year, this is it!
Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2022
I have a Sigma 135mm 1.8 but wanted something that didn't require me to stand too far away from the client. I purchased the 105mm 1.4.

    Positives:

#1. The bokeh and was more pleasing on the 105mm 1.4. You can visually tell simply by looking at the photo on the back of my camera. I use a Sony a7iii.

#2. The compression was not as strong as it is on my 135mm 1.8. It is actually more pleasing. That too I can easily tell by looking on the back of my camera screen.

#3. Being a 1.4 I had more stops of light.

#4. I was able to be at LEAST 10 to 15 feet closer to my clients with the 105mm compared to my 135mm!

    CONS:

#1. This lens is huge and is substantially larger and heavier than my 135mm 1.8

#2. It was not as sharp as my 135mm 1.8. While I couldn't tell by looking on the back of my camera, when I imported the images into Lightroom, I noticed the eyes were ALWAYS more crisp on my 135mm compared to the 105mm. I don't know what it was. But, I was able to focus better on my 135mm compared to the 105mm. Perhaps I received a bad lens? The 105mm is newer than the 135mm! I read sometimes how people get bad ones and send them back multiple times until they receive another one. I didn't wanna do all of that as I just do not have time.

#3. While I was able to be closer to the client when shooting, the results looked very similar to the distance I already shoot when I use my 85mm! I'd say the 105 required me to be able 10 feet further away?

People keep blasting the 135mm saying how it's a "specialty lens" that you cannot do much with. I totally disagree! I have done several shoots with it. Yes, I am about about 15 feet further back, using the 135 versus the 105mm. I purchased a Samyang 85mm 1.4 for less than $400! So, having a 105mm didn't seem that much of a difference in distance.

And, because the 105mm was simply not as crisp as my 135mm I decided to return it.

For head shots and 3/4 shots, my 135mm is perfect. No need for the 105mm. But, if I did want to get full body shots, my 85mm is more than adequate and appeared to be on par with my 135mm when it comes to sharpness.

Yes, it is pricey. But it is gorgeous. I think the weight complaints are a bit overdone - I did a 5K with this thing on my neck with an A7iv =)

As usual, the one downside is a less than perfect auto focus - its no Sony GM - yet it is still quite good, even in low light. These photos are from a night-time race.

Love this portrait lens. It has really nice compression of the backgrounds and it makes it one of my favorite portrait lenses. It is built like a tank with metal body and has some nice weight to it - but not as heavy as 200mm f2 lens by a popular brands.
Focusing is very fast and this lens is sharp even at f1.4
This lens comes in the carrying case, lens caps and hood.

This lens is amazing. It’s sharp, even at 1.4. I used the Sigma 135 1.8 for 3 years and never did I ever imagine the 135 never leaving the bag. In fact, ever since I got my 105, the 135 doesn’t even make it out of the house. I am able to capture gorgeous photos outside as well we use it to capture amazing corporate headshots. This lens is a must have for any portrait photographer

I have yet to test whether this lens is damaged beyond the packaging material damage, however the lens was sold as "new" yet the condition of the box (smashed and crinkled rear right corner) and a partial torn off Sigma logo on top of the box, a partially torn off barcode on top of the box and clear packing type tape on the box lid and sides indicate to me that this is a returned item being passed off as brand new. This is unamusing and if I find problems with the functioning of this lens I will be returning it pronto.

5.0 out of 5 stars Un très bel outil !
Reviewed in France on October 9, 2021

Sfuocato morbido e stupendo, risoluzione super dettagliata. Insomma lo consiglio vivamente a chi vuole fare ritratti.

4.0 out of 5 stars Incredible image quality, but......
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 30, 2020
I already have two Sigma Art series lenses, and have just ordered a fourth. Quite simply, in terms of image quality there is nothing that comes close to them for the price. In fact, some of the reviews actually conclude they offer superior image quality to native lenses costing twice the price. I know there reviews are based on pixel peeping comparisons, and mostly not on how the lens performs in a shoot, but they do illustrate the kind of image quality you can expect.

My thoughts on the Sigma Art series in general. First my set-up. I began using Sigma lenses on a Nikon DSLR, and I have now switched over to a Sony A7iii. This is the second art series lens I have purchased for the Sony, the 50mm f1.4 being the other one. In comparing the two system, the Sigma art lenses were designed for DSLRs and feel a bit unbalanced on a mirrorless camera as they are very heavy. However, they also get criticized for unreliable autofocus. They are generally slower to focus than native lenses, and I really cannot estimate how long it took me fiddling with AF fine tuning to get the autofocus of my 85mm f1.4 accurate on my Nikon D750 (even using the Sigma docking port). Each time I thought it was perfect using the focus chart, I would use it on a shoot and get images where the focus was missed. However, I do not have that problem using my Sony, because mirrorless cameras do not use a phase detection autofocus system. So IMHO these Sigma Art lenses actually focus more reliably on a mirrorless system. The size and weight is a problem, but the new generation of DN lenses address this to an extent as they are specifically designed for mirrorless cameras rather than being DSLR lens which have been adapted. I should point out there is not a DN version of the 105mm at the moment though.

Size and weight. The first thing I need to point out is that this lens is huge. It is bigger and heavier than any other 105mm lens on the market, and indeed heavier than any other lens I have owned. I have used it on a couple of shoots now, and I admit I got used to the weight after a while. However, when switching between this and my other lenses, the weight of the 105mm really feels quite ridiculous. Only time will tell, but I can imagine I may find myself using it less often as a result. It also hardly goes in my camera bag, and with just a couple of shoots I can see light marks on the colossal lens hood just from taking it in and out of the bag. This lens is not that easy to track down, so hiring a copy to trial first was not an option. However, had I done so I am not sure I would have purchased it. I also found it got a lot of stares from passers-by, because it looks just plain odd.

Autofocus. In good light, this lens focuses perfectly even at f1.4. In low light, I found it struggles. Now in general, I find the otherwise awesome Sony autofocus system struggles in low light because it is contrast-based, and low light means less contrast available. However, this lens struggled more than my 50mm. I do not consider it a major problem as I will not be using it in low light that often, but something to be aware of.

Image quality. Obviously the major strength of this lens. I have to say to image quality is incredible, even when shooting wide open. Although it is tempting to do so, you rarely need to shoot at f1.4, but if you do you get crazy bokeh and crazy sharpness around the focal point. Between f4 and f2, which is probably a more realistic range to shoot in, the sharpness and separation from the background is incredible. In fact, it is almost too good as the level of detail you get in skin texture might be a little bit more than you really want, particularly if you are then going to do lots of skin smoothing in post pro. This is possibly the sharpest lens you will ever own, although whether you really want quite that much sharpness is another question.

Value for money. This question divides people. On the one hand it is very expensive for a Sigma lens. On the other hand, for the price there is no other lens which comes even close to it. I don't think Sony do 105mm to allow a direct comparison, but in general I would expect to pay 30% or more extra for the Sony equivalent. SOme of the reviews have objected to the fact that this lens does not have image stabilization, but I really do not see this as a problem when the Sony cameras bodies have this feature. I know the Sony lenses will be lighter, have slightly faster autofocus, and incorporate focus hold buttons, so its a question of whether you consider that worth paying extra for. However, there is something else you might want to consider, which is resale value. If possible I buy lenses used from ebay, and if I find I do not use them they go back on ebay. Even if I have bought the lens new, I find with native lenses I can resell them for 70-80% of the purchase price. Third party lenses, including Sigma Art series, do not hold their value. I recently sold my 85mm after two years of ownership, immaculate condition, boxed, with all original paperwork, and only recovered around 50% of the purchase price. You might think the obvious thing to do is to purchase one used, and save a fortune, but there are hardly any for sale. Probably because they do not do well in auctions, most sellers only advertise them with a "buy-it-now" price, which is usually unrealistically high. So not only are they difficult to pick up used for a reasonable price, they are also difficult to sell without losing a lot of money if you have bought one new.

So in conclusion, the image quality is astonishing, but the size and weight of this lens is pretty ridiculous. Also, I literally purchased this lens just as Sigma announced they were about to release an 85mm f1.4. for mirrorless cameras, which would be half the size of this lens and quite a bit cheaper. Had I known this, I would have held off until I could have done a comparison between the two.

So my conclusion is that this lens probably offers better image quality than any similar lens in the price range, but if you possibly can, hire one first for a shoot to see if you can get on with the size and weight.

    5.0 out of 5 stars Ein Offenblende-Objektiv
Reviewed in Germany on March 27, 2019
    UPDATE:
