30mm F2.8 DN | A
Moving Mirrorless Forward
Redesigned with a metal exterior under the Art category, this high-performance standard lens is designed exclusively for mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras and has the equivalent angle of view as a 60mm lens (35mm equivalent focal length) on the Micro Four Thirds systems and 45mm (35mm equivalent focal length) on the E-mount system. Two glass mold aspherical lenses, including a double-sided aspherical lens, provide excellent correction for all types of aberration. The inner focusing system corrects the fluctuation of aberration to maintain image quality regardless of the focal distance. Sigma’s Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting as well as provides sharp and high contrast images even at the maximum aperture. The superior telecentric optical design improves the image quality throughout the frame. The optical design also allows the lens to be compact and lightweight. This lens benefits from a newly developed linear AF motor, which moves the lens elements directly without the need for gears or the drive of other mechanical parts. This system ensures accurate and quiet autofocusing, making the lens suitable for video recording as well as still photos. The lens features a rounded 7-blade diaphragm creating an attractive blur to the out of focus areas of the image. This Sigma 30mm F2.8 DN has a minimum focusing distance of 30cm/11.8in and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:8.1, and comes in either a silver or black finish.

Doesn't weight much and is compact. The lens is very sharp starting from f/2.8. By F/4 it is super sharp, so much so that I've set mine to f/4 and never change it when using it during the day. If you want greater subject/background separation, then use f/2.8, while not as sharp you will be happy about the results, it's already much sharper than any kit-lens. Going to f/5.6 yields no benefit in sharpness and by f/8 it starts getting softer.
If you want to use f/2.8, f/4 or f/5.6, this Sigma will make you happy. I'm adding a couple pictures: my dog at f/2.8 and a wine glass at the same aperture at night with heavy bokeh (muddiness of the picture is due to post-process noise reduction, as my 5N is old and created lots of noise in this hand-held picture. A newer mirrorless would yield much better results on this Sigma.
That said, I can only give it 4 stars because of how it's built. When the camera is powered off, the internals slide around inside the barrel and rattle a LOT and sound like the're broken. I fear that too much movement over time would damage the internals from all that banging around against the barrel ends.
To summarize, as a beginning photographer, I have found this lens to be a good value for a compact prime. The only downsides are the audible rattle and vary rare camera restarts.
My only complaint is that it can be very shaky.
The clicking noise while the camera is off does not bother me and neither does the smooth focus ring (which makes the camera look nice and sleek).
