AWESOME TIP: When shooting with a super shallow depth of field, switch over to AI Servo mode, lock a focus point over the eye, and let the autofocus do the rest. I discovered this technique and it helps tremendously to increase the rate of in focus images, especially when shooting moving portrait subjects, like models for instance.
Short answer: it's better. So lets gets started. The Nikon 85mm 1.4D is loud, but has great bokeh even though it's softer in the corners wide open, which I think contributes to its 'look'. I also noticed a color cast shooting backlit subjects with the 85mm 1.4D compared to the Sigma. Decent lens for it's age. Now, the Nikon 85mm 1.8G is great. It nails sharpness, the focus is OK, and it's half the price. It's a nice, cheaper alternative, but I choose the Sigma every time I wanted to shoot at 85mm. The overall rendition is much better, the background is far more pleasing, and the focus is pretty reliable for a 85mm @ f1.4. I've compared the bokeh for these lenses and It's huge difference in the real world. Not only is the Sigma letting in more light, the bokeh is way better, and there's less noise. The 1.8G offers better sharpness, but this lens really makes up for it other areas.
Edit: April 26, 2015. Love this lens!! Only complaint I have is not related to performance, but rather the exterior finish. The smooth surface of the lens and hood show every light scratch, scuff and mark from just normal use. It is the least rugged, least mark resistant lens of all I have owned. Sigma needs a textured finish like most other manufacturers. Don't like to have to treat this thing like it's fragile, but you do or it will soon look pretty bad. I'm not rough with my gear, but I do not need to baby anything else like I do this lens. Great lens, otherwise...
