- 1982 Honda Goldwing (front wheel application)
- 1982 Honda Magna (front wheel application)
- 1997 Harley Sportster (rear wheel application)
On the Hondas I installed the magnet on the front wheel since I painted my fork casings black and they blended in nicely with black wiring and black reader. I applied the magnet to the wheel/rim via contact cement and wound the wiring from the computer down the brake line and attached the reader with black zip ties to the fork casings. (You may need to get larger zip ties depending on your fork size). These bikes were customized to cafe racers. The stock wiring that comes with this speedo is plenty long.
On the Harley I purchased the extended wiring kit and ran it to the rear wheel since I went chopper with it and wanted the 21" spoke wheel and shocks to look clean. Just contact cement a magnet to your wheel or disc brake within the specified distance of the reader and you're good. Get creative with it and you can make this invisible on your bike.
Every bike has been spot on accurate too. You need to program your wheel size and that's it. It'll read whatever speed you go at GPS accuracy since I've tested this with my phone. The battery lasts a very long time as well since the computer goes into sleep mode while parked. I also love the feature of twisting the computer out out of the holster while away from my bike and I can keep it in my pocket; don't want those "sticky finger" individuals to help themselves.
Please note: you need this wired model (BC5.12) to work on your bike. The wireless (BC8.12) will not work since any electrical will interfere with the reading; i.e. Headlight, blinks, etc.
- Easy to program & install.
- Long battery life.
- Speedo is very accurate!
- Trip distance is also accurate (no need for gas gauge if you know how many miles to the gallon your bike gets. Just keep an eye on your trip distance).
- Has an Odometer setting that allows you to set your mileage of your bike.
- Can remove the computer and keep with you for theft control.
- This computer doesn't have a backlight so if you're riding at night it's a little difficult to see. If you're cruising the town it's not a big deal since street lights cast enough light to see.
- That's all of the Cons! Seriously, if you want to clean up that cluster of gauges this is a great option.
NOTE: i installed this on my mountain bike and the pick up sensor mounted on the front forks was too far away from the sensor on the spoke. I had to "shim" it out on the fork to get it close enough to sence the spoke pickup sensor. my mountain bike front forks are big and wide, thus the distance between the two sensors, fork and spoke, was too much for the device without shimming it.
the one on my road bike worked fine without having to shim it.
The only room for improvement I can see are 1) the mounting bracket that goes on the handlebar seems slightly flimsy and 2) it would be nice if the display were backlit for night use, but it isn't. In spite of those two things, I really like it and highly recommend it. It's a good choice if you want the basics and aren't too concerned with lots of extra features.
Simple to use, not so simple to figure out the installation instructions. Not sure if the instructions have changed, but I don't remember the first one being so difficult to understand.
Not going to deduct any stars for that because it does very well what it is designed to do. Very simple to read and to operate.
