Fine treatment on a difficult subject. Well researched, well written, and, perhaps most noteworthy, it develops a positive conclusion. The relationship of baptism to the vocational core of the church's existence is a question worth considering, and McMaken's answer is one worth hearing.

There is no shortage of new books on Barth, but this is one of the very best. Travis McMaken's monograph is very well-researched, comprehensive in its grasp of Barth's corpus, illuminating in its explication of Barth's theology, and highly practical in its implications for contemporary Christian life. Let me point out the following, in particular:

1. Much more than an exercise in mere Barth exposition, McMaken's work is a work of historical theology, offering penetrating analysis of a wide range of materials, from the NT to Aquinas to Calvin to Turretin. Readers will come away with a solid grasp of how key themes in soteriology and sacramentology have played out over the centuries.

2. McMaken's key contribution is the way he examines the connection between soteriology and sacramental practice. Basic decisions regarding election, covenant, and justification are the basis for ecclesiological differences.

3. Refreshingly, compared to most academic theological works these days, McMaken connects theology to the exegesis of scripture, as Barth himself insisted that we must. One of the best sections of the book is the excursus looking at nonsacramental baptism in the NT.

4. McMaken defends Barth's rejection of infant baptism against those who would argue that this constitutes a deviation from the rest of Barth's theology. He shows that Barth's position rests on dogmatic decisions made decades earlier. This is not a position commonly held in the field of Barth studies, and the rigor with which it is argued leads me to think it should be the final word on the topic. No one can seriously maintain any longer that CD 4/4 is inconsistent with his core theological positions.

5.

Travis McMaken has written a well thought out thorough engagement of Barth's puzzling stance on infant baptism.

Consequently, anyone who “wants infant baptism should not seek nourishment for the pulpit from Barth’s doctrine of election. . . . It is one or the other—one must decide for onseself” (p. 65).

The Sign of the Gospel: Toward an Evangelical Doctrine of Infant Baptism after Karl Barth is a revised version of the doctoral thesis of W. Travis McMaken. A graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary, he is now an Assistant Professor of Religion at Lindenwood University. In this book, McMaken address one of the most controversial elements of Karl Barth’s “Reformed” theology: his denial of infant baptism. In The Sign of the Gospel, McMaken explicates Barth’s devastating criticism against historical arguments for infant baptism and concludes by offering a post-Barthian view for the future practice of paedobaptism.

The Communication
The Sign of the Gospel reads like a thesis. Though the book does not incorporate as many of the philosophical elements of Barth’s theology (chapter four’s discussion of causality being an exception), it does include a large scope of church theology and necessary theological language. Those studied in theology will not experience any problem with the concepts that make up the first half of the book.

For those familiar with Barth’s theology, this will be even less of a problem. Barth’s doctrine of election plays a crucial part throughout The Sign of the Gospel. McMaken does an outstanding job of boiling down the fullness of Barth’s doctrine. Nevertheless, the doctrine remains laid out solely as a building block for Barth’s views on baptism and its explanation is best suited for a scholarly monograph. The overall level of communication in this book is not kind to the average laymen seeking to understand Barth’s theology on paedobaptism.
