(vastly more often than deduction or induction). Loved the book.

The book itself is one of those wonderful meetings of academic and general interest that Umberto Eco (RIP) often produced or was involved in. My technical interest in buying this book is in the linkages between Peirce's theory of abduction and everyday modes of reasoning. There are many possible ways into this book; I would certainly recommend it for Peirceans looking for something a bit more accessible (I am going to use this for holiday reading). Holmes aficionados who want to read something more academic about the modes of reasoning adopted by their hero should get a lot from this too. Bear in mind that parts of it will involve a not inconsiderable mental workout, especially where bits of formal logic are involved, but the chapter structure means you can dabble as you see fit.
