About the Author

Co-authors and co-parents, Kathleen Ann Harper and William Paul White are the couple behind Signs of a Happy Baby and an integrated online learning center for parents.

Since 2004, William and his network of instructors have taught fun, interactive, and educational sign language classes and playgroups to more than 13,000 parents. William’s brick-and-mortar programs are offered at locations throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, including Kaiser Permanente, Dignity Health, Sutter Health, Blossom Birth, Families@1st at Cisco Systems, and many others. Always fascinated by how people learn, William earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California, Santa Cruz, in psychobiology, the study of behavior from a biological perspective.

Kathleen is a certified life coach and the author of the Amazon bestseller The Well-Crafted Mom. In her groups and one-on-one coaching practice, Kathleen integrates coaching support with creative activities to help moms manage the transitions and challenges of motherhood. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from San Francisco State University in integrative healing, a specialized major incorporating studies in psychology, philosophy, religion, holistic health, and kinesiology. Kathleen and William live in the San Francisco Bay Area with their two sons (who both still sign).

William Paul White never planned on becoming a baby sign language instructor, but when he realized the impact that signing with his own children had on their communication skills and cognitive development, he was inspired to create his own baby sign language curriculum. William has since brought baby sign language classes to more than 13,000 families, helping parents and caregivers communicate with their children long before their babies are able to speak verbally.
Signs of a Happy Baby consolidates his teaching into a comprehensive resource for families, including a photo dictionary with easy-to-follow photos of fun and practical American Sign Language (ASL) signs, and tips for integrating sign language into everyday activities.
As a dancer, William appreciates how physically expressive sign language is. And, with his degree in psychobiology (the study of behavior from a biological approach), sign language appeals to his love of how the brain processes and learns language.
William is passionate about the importance of early communication with children.

We are fortunate enough to have met "Teacher Bill" at a birth and baby fair in the SF Bay Area and were so excited after hearing about his baby sign language classes with Touch Blue Sky. Having a background in Child Development and already having some knowledge at the benefits of signing with babies and toddlers and expecting our first baby, we just knew after meeting Bill that we HAD to take baby sign language classes with him! We have had the most amazing journey with our now 4 year old signing with him. As a baby, he began signing milk to me at 4 months old while nursing. By the time he was 6.5 months old his signs just exploded! Including ANTS IN PANTS (read the book) at 7 months old! Signing with our son has been one of the best decisions we have made thus far. We are so grateful for the wonderful bond and trust signing helped us to establish and create for us. Our sons vocabulary in signs was extremely impressive and by the time he was 15 months old he had 40 verbal words in addition to hundreds (yes hundreds!!!!!) of signs! This book is a must if you have any little ones in your lives! After our experience and also seeing the successful experiences of our family members signing with our son, BABY SIGN LANGUAGE IS A MUST in our books! This book is informative, fun, and helps you truly understand the WHY behind signing with your baby/toddler/young child. Unlike many "baby sign" books/matierials out there, I love that this teaches ASL. Living in an area with a high population of deaf families and also a deaf school, I am grateful that my son is able to befriend deaf/hard of hearing children at the park or when we are out and about. He still enjoys signing and learning new signs and we will forever treasure and appreciate our signing journey! Thanks "Teacher Bill" and Kathleen for this awesome book, we thoroughly enjoyed every part of it! We are honored and proud to read and own this book now!

I loved this book! It's a fast and interesting read and best of all, you can quickly and easily do most of the things this book suggests. If you're a brand new parent, the benefits of exposing language to babies is indisputable. We are a two language household and while I heard some parents say that they wanted their babies to learn English first before introducing them to another language, I knew that based on solid research about language development, I wanted to expose my newborn to both of the languages spoken in our home. In fact I even added a third language - sign language. Instead of being stumped by three languages all trying to work themselves out in his brain, my baby began sounding out single syllable words at 7 months.

This book teaches you a very easy way to incorporate sign language into your life and parenting. They offer useful anecdotes -- some of which you will most definitely relate to -- to illustrate how incorporating sign language early into your babies life will help you connect and communicate with your baby and make those early years a heck of a lot easier. Sign language is also so dramatic and interesting for the baby to watch, it's a great bonding tool.

This book is a real gem and every new parent needs to read it. I highly recommend teaching sign language to your baby. It's VERY easy and fun to do. This book shows you how to do it.

I really enjoyed this book! It was informative, yet fun and easy to read, which is appreciated since I'm constantly running after a newly mobile one year old. I enjoyed the tone of the book; it is gentle and positive, and the dedication and passion that these authors feel for signing, parenting, their children, and each other is apparent. While I enjoyed many aspects of the book (the signing dictionary with pictures, the scientific research provided throughout the book, the personal stories of families and the authors), I think what stuck with me the most is the connection the authors make between signing with your children and responsive parenting. Signing is another tool that can be used, alongside other methods, to provide a loving and nurturing environment for our children that is conducive to learning and growing. Signing has been a wonderful way not only to communicate with my child, but also to connect and encourage her independence and growth. Family and friends who once dismissed my learning to sign with my 6 month old are now amazed that at 1 she's able to tell me with signs when she wants more food, or wants to sleep, or sign elephant when she wants to read her favorite book about elephants. Whether you are a beginner to baby sign language, or are looking for some encouragement to stay the course, I think you'll find Kathleen and Bill's book informative, reassuring, and fun to read!
