Easy enough, when you go to that web page

DO NOT FOLLOW THE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS found on the website!

Product came with all chinese instructions, and a web address in English. Easy enough, when you go to that web page, you can display it in english and see and download english instructions and software.

HOWEVER: the install instructions first tell you to deactivate virus protection software and then run the installer. Well, I did not disable virus protection, and my Norton AV caught them trying to modify the Bios on my system! Never trust the Chinese! BTW, the app did install, and it appears to run.

Works OK but terrible documentation

At $59.95 this looked like a really attractive unit to buy. It shouldn't be this hard. The program on the disk which was included won't work with the programmer since it is out of date. This disk was all in Chinese with no option for English. Luckily I guessed and got it to install and then the programmer was in English. That is when I found out it would not work since it was so old. I downloaded the new program and that is when the fun started. Instead of being in a .ZIP file it is in an .RAR file. Not being familiar with this file format I finally found that I had to find a RAR extractor. The first one did not work. The second one WinZIP included an RAR extractor that finally created the .EXE installation file. The new version installed ok but would not program the 27C256 EPROM. I kept getting an ID error. Quite by accident I unchecked the "Check ID" checkbox and then it worked fine. Wasted about 4 hours trying to get this installed. Not a customer-friendly experience!

Works, cheap, but challenging to install and use

Major language barriers with this one!
First, don't bother with the software on the mini-CD. It will install to an inconvenient directory, have Windows permissions problems, and just demand to be immediately updated.
Find Xgrpro TL866II Plus software online. Minor installation quirks, and must be manually setup to run as administrator. Nothing major, but hard to navigate since every dialog or instruction is weakly translated to English.
It then requires firmware update of the USB DIP programmer device itself. Again, a straightforward step if not for language.
ID'ing chips and reading them works, though it took a while to figure out, and required manually searching online to associate JEDEC chip mfg IDs to mfg name. Software should include such info.
All that said - it worked for me to read 40-50 ancient DIP32 EEPROM chips I needed to archive. It did the job, and much more cheaply than my next option would have been.

Little extremely nice device! Recognizes almost everything! I have some really old EEPROM memories condemned to the oblivion but with this I just dust them off and put them back in action in no time! The list of available IC's to work with is really really long!!

Take into account that there is no IDE, context sensitive editor, comment blocks, data types neither breakpoints! For MCUs and MPUs, it exposes the program memory (FLASH NAND/NOR memory) area and the NVM usually EEPROM to write on directly by typing in hexadecimal. It also exposes configuration flags (also NVM) to SET/RESET.

A little pain in the *** to write long programs or either writing long configurations matrixes or data directly in EEPROMs since the editor isn't helpful and is really error prone!

Anyway, I love it and feel really happy to get access to that hidden and intricate world within the ICs!

This is one of the few modern, low-cost programmers that works on a 64-bit OS such as Windows 7. However the software isn't that great, and you frequently get errors with programming flash devices (29EE010, etc.) as well as GAL devices such as the 16V8 and 22V10 series.

It is reliable for reading EPROMs and mask ROMs at least, and if that's all you want to do then it's a good tool to have.

Viruses in software/driver download...?!

Attempted to download the driver/software for this, but I couldn't because it failed a virus scan and was automatically deleted from my system. I submitted the file to Microsoft for analysis, but can't imagine I'll hear back anytime soon, but we'll see. I wonder why others haven't run into this issue? One other reviewer mentioned some trouble with Norton, but apparently continued with the install anyway?! If it really is a false positive, wouldn't the manufacturer submit the file through the false-positive processes of the major anti-malware vendors? Perhaps my negative review and return will help this...

My advice, steer clear, but if you're determined to own this, at least download the driver/software package to a sandboxed environment first and see what your anti-virus solution says prior to purchasing this product (there's no software included in the box, so you might as well try this first).

I give it four out of five stars. I was able to pull the most important data off of a very rare piece of hardware, with equally rare information to be backed up. It lost one star because of its lack of compatibility with one of the chips (exact model number to be added to this review soon). I haven't tried writing to a chip yet, so that part of the review is also coming soon. Overall, very satisfied with this device considering what I was able to back up!

Way easier than a Willem programmer and nearly as cheap!

This programmer is great! It even supports some of the 35 year old EPROMs and non-standard Windbond EEPROMs I’ve never been able to write to before. Not only is it inexpensive, but it’s actually saved me money by letting me reprogram lots of ROMs from my scrap pile.

The list of supported chips is very extensive. Even then, if you have one that isn’t supported but know the right voltages and pinout, you can usually just select a similar make and model.

My only complaint is that the manual is entirely in Chinese and the Windows hardware driver is unsigned. However, if you’re technical enough to be reading/erasing/programming EEPROMs and other PICs, you can probably figure it out pretty easily.
