This is another well written and entertaining read from Karen Rose Smith. The characters are well drawn and the mystery was great. There were a few possible suspects to choose from and I didn't know until the end who it was. I love this series not to mention the mouth watering recipes by the author that are included at the end of each of the books. If you are a fan of cozy mysteries, then I recommend this series.
**Please note: I was given a copy of this book by the publisher through Netgalley.com in exchange for an honest review.
Overall, Silence of the Lamps was another amazing add to this series packed with laughable moments and truly lovable characters, making this a fast-paced, fun read. I actually think this is my favorite in the series, which is really saying something as the previous four books have been awesome cozy mystery reads! I can’t wait until December to get my hands on Shades of Wrath!
When Caprice stages homes, her sister, Nikki, is the caterer. At her recent home staging, Drew Pierson shows up and causes a scene. (Drew is Nikki’s ex-suitor, who she turned down as a partner in her business.) Drew has opened his own catering business and seems intent on ruining Nikki.
Soon Nikki discovers Drew has stolen one of her recipes (and is passing it off as his own). She asks Caprice to go with her to confront him, only to find him dead and the base to an expensive Tiffany lamp missing.
With Nikki being a prime suspect, Caprice starts asking questions. She soon finds Drew was a deceitful person and more than a few people could have wanted him dead.
Along with seeking clues to the murder, Caprice helps find a home for a pregnant, stray cat her Uncle Dom found, while pet-sitting. In addition, her boyfriend, Grant, is visited by his ex-wife and changes are coming for others in Caprice’s family.
Caprice’s sleuthing leads her into danger when she is confronted by the killer. I didn’t guess the killer and was totally surprised, when revealed.
(I received an advance copy, from NetGalley. I, also, purchased a print copy to add to my series collection.)
It is a small thing but I loved when Caprice tells Drew's grandmother that she is not there just to find out about Drew, she is also there for the lonely elderly woman; it is a beautiful indication of the kind of caring person that Caprice was raised to be. Of course the fact that she is looking into Drew's death to protect her sister Nikki who is a likely suspect shows that the relationship among the sisters is golden. I also love that the rescue cat is named for one of Ms. Smith's rescues; I follow her FB page and blog and have become quite attached to all of her furbabies.
Even the warmth and strength of her family does not protect her from the insecurities her earlier relationships have left, so when Grant's ex shows up, she really doesn't know how to handle it.
I have one quibble. One of the things I have like about this series is that Caprice did not place herself in danger although she often encounter it, but at least once in this book, she didn't use any better judgement than a typical cozy heroine and these novels are far better than the typical cozy mystery. Just this once, I will forgive Caprice for not being perfect because the book was still great!
