Review
--Charles Krauthammer, Pulitzer Prize-winning syndicated columnist and author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Things That Matter
"Kirsten Powers convincingly calls out her fellow liberals for being astonishingly illiberal. A great read."
--Brit Hume, Fox News senior political analyst
"Kirsten Powers explodes and skewers 'The Silencing'--the demonizing and repression of different views, especially conservative views. Here is a liberal calling out other supposedly liberal people who claim to believe in free speech but tell all who disagree with them to shut up. Hallelujah--you are lucky to have this book in your hands!"
--Juan Williams, Fox News political analyst and New York Times bestselling author of Muzzled
"I salute my friend Kirsten Powers for boldly and eloquently breaking the spiral of silence on silencing."
--Eric Metaxas, New York Times bestselling author of Miracles and Bonhoeffer
"Tolerance and free expression are founding values of our republic and yet they're under attack from the extreme wings of the American political spectrum. Shining a harsh light on the 'illiberal left, ' Kirsten Powers exposes a grim campaign to silence speech. This is an important book."
--Ron Fournier, senior political columnist and editorial director of National Journal
"In this examination of the multiplying attacks on freedom of speech, Kirsten Powers casts a cool eye on the damages done to politics, academia, and civic discourse by the aggressive assertion of a perverse new entitlement. It is the postulated right to pass through life without being disturbed, annoyed, offended, or discomposed by the expression of anyone else's thoughts."
--George F. Will, Pulitzer Prize-winning syndicated columnist and author of the New York Times bestseller A Nice Little Place on the North Side
From the Inside Flap
Powers chronicles this forced march toward conformity in an exposé of the illiberal tactics deployed to shut down debate on some of the most important issues of the day. While preaching tolerance and claiming to hold liberal values, the "illiberal left" works to delegitimize political and ideological opponents in ways that stifle freedom of expression, thought, and religious belief.
In The Silencing, Kirsten Powers, herself a proud liberal--but from a far more tolerant Jeffersonian tradition--exposes the illiberal left. You'll learn:
- Why the illiberal left has become an Orwellian "big brother," policing what it deems acceptable speech and opinions
- How the illiberal left is obsessed with delegitimizing Fox News
- How illiberal left pundits--even self-proclaimed "feminists" (and Powers names names)--engage in outrageously misogynistic and sexist dismissals of their female opponents
- How illiberal colleges and universities limit freedom of expression to tightly regulated "free speech zones" and ban speakers (even liberals) with whom the illiberal left disagrees
- How "truth" matters little to the illiberal left, for whom ideology is everything
- How is it that liberalism, once associated with open-mindedness and reason, has become a vehicle for irrational prejudice, ideological conformity, and the marginalization and punishment of alternative opinions? Kirsten Powers chronicles this troubling trend in perhaps the most important--and chilling--political book of the year.

About the author

Kirsten Powers is a USA Today columnist and CNN senior political analyst. The Washington Post has called her “bright-eyed, sharp-tongued, [and] gamely combative” and “a ferocious advocate for her points of view.” Kirsten's book on how to bring grace into our toxic public discourse will be published November 2021 by Convergent Books (Crown Publishing). Prior to USA Today, Kirsten was a columnist for the Daily Beast, American Prospect Online and the New York Post. The Columbia Journalism Review called her as “an outspoken liberal journalist” in a sea of opposition at Fox News, where she previously served as a political analyst. Before her career in journalism, Kirsten was a political appointee in the Clinton Administration and worked in New York Democratic politics.

Ms. Powers’ book clearly demonstrates that when liberals find that they can’t compete in the arena of ideas, they seek ways to shut down the opposition and debate entirely. She shows how they seek to delegitimize dissent and dissenters and declare them irrelevant. She gives examples of how they are not opposed to intimidating individuals to shut down debate; they believe free speech is their right, and OK for them, but not others, and how their definition of free speech does not include true speech or honest speech. Lying and cheating are legitimate, justified and acceptable, as long as liberal objectives are obtained. Example; Harry Reid’s lies about Mitt Romney not paying taxes. When questioned about his obvious lying, his response was, “He lost didn’t he”.
There is a very interesting chapter titled “The War on Fox News” which Ms. Powers details attempts to silence Fox News, starting with Obama himself and going down through the Obama administration and the Democratic Party all the way to the mainstream media, the mouthpiece of the Democratic Party. Examples she exposes are absolutely appalling, and certainly not what our forefather’s intended as a government by the people and a “free press”, who were supposed to be watchdogs on the government not an arm of it.
There are a couple of chapters where Ms. Powers expose feminists, their support of the thought police, and how they reject facts, fairness and the rule of law, and the chapters are similarly titled. These two chapters are very scary to say the least, particularly in the acceptance of absurdity as fact.
Liberalism’s war on free speech starts in our public school systems and continues through our colleges and universities, which have been invaded and taken over by liberals and liberal thinking to the point that free thinking and free expression are prohibited, except in free speech zones, which typically require a reservation weeks in advance. Ms. Powers shows how starting with young and impressive minds, liberals drum in toxic ideas while suppressing free thought and objective creating thinking, in the very institutions that are supposed to encourage creative thought.
The most interesting thing about this book is the author, Kirsten Powers, is a lifelong Democrat and a liberal, who has worked in the Democratic Party and the Clinton administration, and who is calling out her fellow liberals. If a liberal can see what’s happening to America, and rejects it, this should be a real wakeup call for the rest of us.
Conservatives and liberals alike, who care about the future of America and the freedoms we enjoy should read this book to understand the disastrous path this country in on. With the victory of Donald Trump in the recent election, perhaps this trend can be reversed. While I’m sure Trump’s intentions are good and are to do just that, this “Silencing” has been going on for a long time and has matured into a culture of its own; I fear that in addition to the Trump administration’s efforts, it will require a huge public outcry for years to overcome it. However, books like this one should certainly increase awareness of what’s happening, who’s responsible and what needs to be done to fight back.
After I finished reading the book, I looked again at the reviews on Amazon. There were 65 reviews. Most were positive, but 9 were very negative. Almost all of the negative reviews attacked Kirsten Powers for being a "right-winger" (which she is not) or because she appears on "Faux News". I certainly didn't see anyone challenge her assertion that there is a strong current of attack on free speech, especially on college campuses. The negative reviews were almost tailor-made confirmation of the main point Powers made in the book.
Although she doesn't really say it in the book, I think the approach the "illiberal left" is taking now is right out of Rules for Radicals. You'd think that after almost 50 years, the old playbook wouldn't work any longer, but it apparently does.
What it amounts to, I think, is that at least part of the "illiberal left" consists of people who feel like they have been bullied for a long time (or are part of a group that has been bullied for a long time), and now its their turn to bully the bullies.
To many of us, maybe most of us, our ideology trumps almost everything else. Unfortunately, that's true on the right and left. But if we're going to have a continuing, functioning free society, it's important for people to care more about protecting everyone's freedom to speak their mind (especially people with whom we disagree) than our own ideologies. This book does a great job of calling out the illiberal left on college campuses and the media on this. I'm sure there are places where you could call out the "illiberal right" as well. Both sides need to change on this.

Kirsten Powers is a life-long democrat whose ideals are very liberal. Her book poignantly describes the manipulative and bullying methods used by those who repress free speech in the name of openness. Those she defines over and over again as the "illiberal left". Her examples on campuses across the US would be hilarious if they weren't scary. Her ample description of the illiberal attitudes in the media, the press and the illiberal blogs are chilling. We see situations like these in Canada regularly where opinions are booed and insulted, people are bullied and tagged horrible names if they express anything that diverts from the mainstream, PC thinking. We are losing what made us who we are: a democracy that argues and debates instead of fighting.
Thanks to people like Kirsten we can hope to see debates continue.
"Illiberal Left" pieties, victimology and all the rest are plugged so relentlessly that they creep into the mind unbeknown, but a book as incisive as this one dispels the fug in a second. Anyone of common honesty, regardless of political leanings, should be able to read it and acknowledge the disservices done by media bias to freedom of speech and clarity of discourse.
