Cyrus has a strong universe here, some great plot line and so many possibilities - if she could smooth out her characters just a touch -tweak the plot line to flow just a bit smoother she would drag us in a bit more - holding us captive and she would have a five star read -
I felt that it just went in too many directions at once - as though she was trying to put a whole series and all of its characters in one book
as for Killian I really wanted more from his character - he had so much possibility; as did Seth and a couple of the other shifters males. He was the wounded warrior with a heart of gold- a lot of his early scenes just reflected violence and ignorance with no supporting factors
As for Blythe- I just could not stomach her - for the life of me I could not figure out why Killian kept her -she was whinny, immature, absolutely lacked any sense of decorum - she did have three or four scenes where I thought maybe, possibly she would become a character worthy of being a heroine - Yeah NO
I also struggled with the beginning scenes - this Running, for example, which sets up Blythe to meet her Mate. She's a complete, whiney, immature teenager who knows nothing of the real world. Getting picked for the Running is a complete shock to her, yet in several places the author explains that it was her turn to go - there's also a bit where the author explains that every family has to send someone to the Running each year. But yet, only ten women are picked to go the the Running. So there's only ten families in the whole world? Later on, it's explained that there are several other sites where the shift shapers live - so they have separate Runnings for each of their houses? Why wouldn't they just have one, if the human population hates the Shifters so much? There's just so many loopholes and things that aren't consistent and don't make any sense to anyone who thinks about the plot for even half a second (I could give many, many multiple examples but don't want to completely spoil the book).
So, the first half of the book was basically Blythe meeting the shifters and getting to know and accept her knew world. She cries on every page, whines 3 or 4 times a page, and is extremely annoying. Then she falls in love in half a second, stops crying on every page (now she cries every five pages) and all of a sudden, she starts to grow up. It's not a realistic character arc - she's not slowly growing as a person, her personality just changes. All in all, however, the first half is enjoyable, you just have to ignore some of the plot holes and the constant crying.
The shapeshifters are mostly written the exact same way - they have one side to them - violence. I get it - they are prisoners, don't get to see the sun, their life sucks - but they are all extremely one sided - as is Blythe herself.
In the second half of the book, most of the plot disappears, and you are left with Blythe having sex, cooking & baking, and abuse, and a lot of stilted conversations where nothing much happens.
So, with all of my complaining - why am I giving the book three stars? Because even with all of that, I did like the book. Blythe was so annoying, but the world building was very very interesting, especially if the world is developed more. There's a huge similar to the Running verses the Hunger Games, and I'd love to see the author take her own spin to this. There's a huge amount of room for more stories to be developed in this world.

New Author. (for me), New Book and Brand New Way of seeing things. Page turner is an understatement from the very beginning there is Action, Trauma, Abuse, Death and let's not forget Love, Lust. This book has everything believe me. Definitely of MUST-READ!!
Blythe Hobbs family have just received a letter saying that it's their year. They are expected to give up their daughter to go to the Running. How can a daughter of a low income bakers be asked to do the Running? Blythe baked desserts, goodies she didn't know how to fight, guns, knives no she baked goodies, she didn't know how to defend herself. But she put her head up high, quit crying and do the unexpected. HIDE!!!
Killian is a Tiger Shifter even the biggest bear was petrified of him. His name alone had anyone quaking in their boots. So how could he be good for a mate? Especially a young, naive little girl that has never even met a shifter let alone knew about being mated to one.
A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book and my comments here are my honest opinion.
The Humans keep the shifters imprisoned. Then they have what is called the Running each year. The Running is an event, where the humans offer up young women for mates to the shifters. During the Running the women can win their freedom by either evading the shifters for twelve hours, or kill the shifters.
Blythe is one of the chosen this year. She manages to evade several of the shifters. This is until a Tiger Shifter Killian captured her. Killian had not planned on taking a mate. As he does not believe in love. Even after he captures Blythe he vows to only use her for breeding. Can Blythe take this wild tiger shifter?
You will love this exciting, suspenseful, thrilling, funny, sweet, and steamy hot shifter Romance.
