BUT the game won't load at the 2nd level of the mall (otherworld). It gets to the pulsating loading screen, but won't load the next area. I've tried cleaning the cd and it still doesn't work.
games ever made!
Much more scary then any Resident Evil game or any other.
You play as Heather Mason (yes, daughter of none other then Harry Mason
from Silent Hill 1) SH3 seems inspired not only by the movie Jacob's Ladder
but also by Hellraiser and even Resident Evil to a certain extent as well
as almost any David Lynch film (think Eraserhead, for example.
The game begins in a creepy amusement park filled with horrible, nightmarish
monsters, However, this sequence will end as soon as Heather falls down a hole
or dies... She then wakes up in a cafe at a shopping mall.
It is your job to guide Heather through not only the shopping mall but
also many other places in the game - such as through a subway, sewer,
underpass, Daisy Villa Apartments (where a game changing and Silent Hill
changing major event takes place) Part of Silent Hill (you'll be very
familiar with some locations both from SH1 and SH2 btw) Brookhaven Hospital,
and a few other locations. Some of these include the nightmare/otherworld
versions of these places that turn bloody, creepy, nightmarish and hellish.
Along the way you'll meet various characters such as; Douglas, a private
detective in his 50's, Vincent, a rather strange man and Claudia who seems
crazy. You'll learn more about Heather, Harry and the other characters as
the game progresses including through finding memo's and notebooks and such.
Heather really does have an attitude like a real teenage girl and acts
like one through most of the game yet she is mature for her age as well;
think Buffy from Buffy The Vampire Slayer (The TV Series)
(On a side note Heather is 17 years old btw)
SH3 is a short to medium length game taking around anywhere from 3 to 6
hours to complete but probably more for first time players and beginners
of the game.
The cutscenes are well done and take place in game. Graphics are really good
for a PS2 game and the atmosphere is very well done and creepy. Sometimes a
room will turn into a nightmarish/otherworld realm right before your eyes.
The sound is good and so is the music and sound effects at times often very
creepy and nerve wracking. The voice acting is ok but could have been better
for some characters. Industrial sound effects provide for a chilling atmosphere.
There are puzzles to solve in the game. Some of these can be solved in an easy
manner using logic and common sense. However for some puzzles you may need advice
from a Silent Hill fansite that gives a walkthrough of the game such as on Gamefaq's.
Some of the puzzles are almost impossible to figure out; others don't make much sense.
The monsters and bosses are really creepy and seem like something straight out of
Hellraiser but at the same time original as well for a Silent Hill game. Some of
the bosses are tough but the final one is somewhat easy to beat.
My only complaint about the game so far is the lack of items and ammo. It seems there
are not really enough health items or ammo compared to the many monsters you'll run into
in the game. This is not too much of a problem as you'll have plenty of melee weapons such
a steel pipe, katana, etc. that don't require ammo (unlike the handgun, shotgun or
submachine gun does)
For every time you beat the game a secret will be unlocked. There are dozens of outfits
to unlock for Heather as well as 3 weapons (flamethrower, submachine gun with unlimited
ammo and heather beam), a weapon/outfit combo, and a few other secrets as well (such as
getting a gold/silver steel pipe from a fairy in the sewer system your second time playing
through if you know what to do to get it)and some SH2 references hidden throughout the game.
You can adjust the number of bullets you get every time the game is beat (just reload
a saved game from the end then beat the final boss again then save your game results over
the previous game results) up to 5x to get much more ammo throughout the game. You can
also play the game in extreme mode (there are about 20 extreme modes) after beating it
I rate Silent Hill 3 5/5 stars for fun, creepy atmosphere, intense gameplay,
great graphics and chilling sound as well as mind bending puzzles and freakish
On a side note: If you have Silent Hill 2 saved on the same memory card you use
to play Silent Hill 3 with there will be a few SH2 references in this game.
Silent Hill 2 dealt with the male fear of being a lone. Silent Hill 3 dealt with the female fear of being totally vulnerable. And as a big guy, I am not used to that by any means. It really rattled my persecption.
