With everything going on in our world right now and the kids home from school, it’s the perfect time to encourage reading for pleasure. Alex Hiam’s first book in his Silent Lee Series, Silent Lee and the Adventure of the Side Door Key, is the perfect book to engage them. Older children and kids in their early teens will indeed fine pure pleasure in reading this magical adventure.
Hiam’s tale is packed with excitement, wit and at times down right wackiness. His style resonates with both the feel of the classics and the relevance of the moment. I enjoyed it thoroughly both as an adult and as a children’s’ author. It made me feel like a kid again reading Half Magic, by Edgar Eager, for the first time.
Silent Lee, Sie, the protagonist, is a super smart 14-year-old girl who has grown up primarily, but not exclusively, in the century before us. She is feisty, self-reliant and unique in many other ways, as the story will unfold. She can access the past and present through a magical side-door in her Aunt Generous’ mansion and she has the key that unlocks it. But now her beloved Auntie Gen, who has raised and loved her far more than her absent mother, has disappeared.
Then there is the neighbor boy, Raahi, who is a book-loving, brainy, compassionate and nearly blind (without his thick glasses) young man who becomes intrigued with Silent Lee. These two make the perfect team for a magical and wild adventure.
I am looking forward to book two, Silent Lee and the Oxford Adventures, which is due out this spring.
