Sara is a legal secretary who is being subtly harassed by a male colleague. She meets David at the animal sanctuary run by her aunt and uncle.
As time passes David and Sara mange to develop first friendship then love as Sara learns to sign and try to understand more about the silent world in which David lives. Through it she establishes lasting friendships and an enduring love develops between her and David. But how will they cope with social prejudices against David's disability, especially when his own mother has never accepted him?
Find out how things work out for David & Sara in this beautifully crafted story about love and friendship against the odds. Kristen Stone handles an emotive subject with great skill and sensitivity. But this is nothing less than I would expect from the author who brought us the wonderful Edge of Extinction.
The story explores David's difficult relationship with his mother, and his relationship with Sara and their blossoming loving relationship, and how she adapts to David's world. This is a love story that will touch your heart, and touches deeply on human nature and emotion.
I read this book in one sitting; it was such a compelling read. I found myself caring deeply for David from the start. It was brilliant to see a love story told so well, and researched by the author to give a true to life account of what life is like for David. Kristen Stone books always amaze me, each one you read are completely different, but they do have something which makes them all similar, they are all fantastic stories that will keep you enchanted from beginning to end.
David was rejected by his mother and up to a point his father. Ms Stone cleverly uses flashbacks between David’s childhood and the present day to show us how his life ran its course during this time; punctuated by some heart-breaking moments and some lovely ones with his teacher, Annie at his boarding school.
In the present, David finds love and learns to overcome his bewildered emotional turmoil. This is not a sloppy love story, but a good insight into how deafness can affect an otherwise perfectly ‘normal’ person and those around him. I found it interesting learning about how he and Sara developed their sign language for communication. I also found David’s relationship with his dog very moving.
A well-crafted story covering deafness and handled well by Ms Stone.

Faith Mortimer (author of mystery, suspense and romance)
As an animal lover I thought it was touching when David started working at the animal sanctuary and a certain attraction begins with Sara which leads to more obstacles for David to deal with.
