Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Marc Ribot is widely recognized as one of the great
guitar originals his distinctively edgy and impassioned
sound can recently be found on albums by such diverse
musicians as Robert Plant/Alison Krauss, Norah Jones,
Allen Toussaint, McCoy Tyner, Marianne Faithful, John
Zorn, and The Black Keys. Silent Movies finds Ribot
taking another surprising step in a career filled with
unexpected turns.
Almost a polar opposite of his last release, Party
Intellectuals, Silent Movies is mostly filled with his
gorgeously contemplative compositions performed solo,
with minimal overdubs. The album reflects Ribot s
fascination with movies and contains pieces intended to
function as music for films: some adaptations of music
he has written for film, some for movies that he scored
that were never released, some for classic silent films
that he scored for his own amusement, and some for
films of his own imagination.

Review

A visionary guitarist, Ribot is a fount of pithy
commentary. --New York Times

He is mercurial in the best possible sense and
impossible to categorize neatly. --National Public Radio

every morning and night I've been listening to this record. Sometimes while reading, sometimes while sitting right up to the stereo and listening to all the beautiful subtleties of his phrasing. The record has a decidedly elegiac tone. In someways I expected more humor from a release titled Silent Movies, but I couldn't be happier with this record. It may be a touch more accessible than Saints although Saints has a lot of variation and is a masterpiece. This is a more brooding and hypnotic and romantic record. Ribot's brand of romanticism is not tender in the way that some like Nike Drake or Brad Mehldau can be, but is fiery and passionate in the way that Miles' playing or a Picasso painting can evoke.

When you are sitting in the dark beside a fireplace, holding a mug of ale, and thinking about plot elements for a novel, this album is what you want to be listening to. I could trot out the usual adjectives, but I'm not. You will recall them, too, while you are listing to "Silent Movies."

Marc Ribot keeps popping up on all sorts of intriguing recordings, and he has made another one.

Marc Ribot is known for two things -- his superb role as a hired guitarist on all sorts of recordings (such as Tom Waits: Rain Dogs and T Bone Burnett: The Criminal Under My Own Hat), and his role as an avant-garde guitarist and composer, a key player in the Downtown NYC scene for decades.

Here we hear Ribot in an entirely different context -- solo guitar music, mainly acoustic, composed for films. As Ribot explains in the liner notes:

"This is an album of film music: some were pieces originally composed for movie scores, others for films I turned down but found myself writing for anyway, still others for projects that never existed outside of my head. All have been transcribed/re-imagined as solo guitar pieces... ...The title and some of the compositions were also inspired by my experience preparing for a live accompaniment of the Charlie Chaplin film "The Kid" at Merkin Hall in January 2010 as part of the NY Guitar Festival."

"Natalia" and "Requiem for a Revolution" were composed for "The General," a documentary film directed by Natalia Almada. "Delancey Waltz," "Fat Man Blues," and "Bateau" were originally composed for the motion picture "Drunk Boat," produced by JD Foster. "Variation 1," "Flicker," "Requiem for a Revolution," "Postcard from N.Y.," and "Sous le ciel de Paris" feature textured electronic soundscapes by Keefus Ciancia.

While there is variety from track to track -- "Natalia" for instance is electric and "Fat Man Blues" is humorous -- overall, the mood is melancholy.

After 3-4 listens, I *think* I *really* like this album - not in a "change my life" kind of way, but in a way that expands my thinking and makes me want to reach for my guitar play. It's not Marc Ribot the noisy experimenter; it's more like Ribot sitting on his front porch strumming little ditties. Little ideas that turn into melodies that draw you in. If you're a Ribot fan, I would say this is essential listening. If you're not, but you're into interesting, instrumental guitar work, it still might be up your alley.

I love this record! Amazing, spooky, haunting, intimate solo works by the legend Marc Ribot. I am really pleased that people put out records this good amidst the sea of commonplace work. I applaud the artist, as well as the producer, and the label for doing this. It's not wasted on me.
