Editorial Reviews

Review

aIn a simple, clear, engaging style that nicely balances necessary fact and edifying anecdote, [Johnston] propounds his belief that the greatest problem in the world today ais the imperfection of our love; that is to say, our lack of mysticism.aa

From the Back Cover

'Silent Music' breaks down the barriers between science and religion, as well as between religions themselves, in order to extrapolate a comprehensive understanding of the 'science of meditation.'

This is one of those rare books one encounters that contains such a breadth and scope of all things Mystic. The book is smartly written. Each chapter covers a great deal of material; so to digest, I would read and then reflect for a day or three, and then return. Truthfully, I did not want this book to end! Part II, chapter five titled 'Intimacy' is worth the price of the book alone. Johnston delves into Cosmic Consciousness through the lens of the Mystic and unconditional Love that makes great fodder for contemplation. His writing is practical and grounded; even though the topics discussed can get astral and mystical. Johnston also skillfully works in the epilogue by St. John of the Cross throughout the book, as sort of a supporting thesis, which always made me smile:

My Beloved is the mountains, the
solitary wooded valleys, strange
islands...silent music.
- St. John of the Cross

If you have an aspiration to study how the mystic approaches meditation, as well as the Christian/Buddhist dialogue, this volume is a treasure for any spiritual library.

Splendid background for meditation time: Highlights the threads of connection between Zen and Christian contemplation (paraphrase from the book section on brainwave and feedback) Johnston's perspective has been a welcome companion on my travels through about 30 years since I first bought the book.

Had this book when it was first published. Lent it to "someone" who didn't return it. Have remembered it as being exceptional, if one is inclined to meditate. Thanks to Amazon it's again in my library. It's still exceptional.
