The Windrose Chronicles are among my all-time favorite books, and a frequent reread. The world has depth and intricacies, the characters are amazing -- and far from your standard heroes! -- and the plot twists and turns without becoming impossible to follow.
A must-read for anyone who likes fantasies.
Unfortunately there are quite a few typos. Not on every page, thankfully, but a few bad ones in each chapter. The text was clearly scanned in so you will see the same errors repeated, for example the name "Caris" scanned as "Cams" a few times. Annoying, but not enough to make me throw it down in disgust.
4-stars for the interesting and unique story and Hambly's writing.
There are some OCR errors which weren't corrected by the publisher when the books were scanned. They're not significant enough to make the text unreadable or confuse the plot, but they do detract from the overall reading experience, thus the removal of one star. Otherwise, they're satisfactory. I have a hard-bound copy of this and The Silicon Mage, and a paperback copy of Dog Wizard, but I wanted copies that I could take with me while traveling. These fit the bill. Nice to have some of my favorite novels in a more permanent format.

I am glad to say that it didn't disappoint! The characters are cleverly portrayed and don't conform to stereotypes. There is a twist to the tale and despite having read this about 20 years ago, re-reading this I found myself not trusting my memory as the "twist" is well executed and the characters plausible. The technology is dated but for those of us who remember it, the nostalgia is OK and it is still plausible in most respects.
What is very original about this is that it is a fantasy tale about magic and swords, but it is set in a culture where commerce and industry are beginning to take a form that we'd recognise - the birth of an industrial revolution.
The story involves a character from 'our' world and this is well handled. A plus point as it's where a lot of fantasy starts to jar.
If you like intelligent fantasy, you'll like this. But if you already know Barbara Hambly, you will know that she is consistently good. I started re-reading Immortal Blood
because I was reading 'Twilight' to see if it was suitable for my daughter and was feeling the need for a strong independent intelligent heroine in a vampire novel.
