When Matthews declines the purchase offer, the developer makes a veiled threat, which Salem doesn’t initially take seriously until things start going bad. The lake community has suffered many tragedies, one of which was the loss of local law enforcement, which forces Salem and his family to take the law into their own hands.
As usual, Ronald Paxton weaves and intricate tale with vivid scenery and a variety of well developed characters and a fast paced plot (I read this in 3 days…).
Note (and perhaps a bit of a spoiler): I really struggled with this review rating, this is my third Paxton book and 5 stars was the very least I could give the previous 2 books (I would have been happy to give them 10s), however there seemed to be quite a few sexual scenes that I really didn’t feel added to the plot, they seemed a bit forced and I felt they were almost like filler and unnecessary. But don’t let that deter you; Silent Waltz is a fantastic read that is difficult to put down.
I receive books from authors for free in exchange for an honest review. Mr. Paxton contacted me and asked if I’d like to review Silent Waltz, since I’d already reviewed and 5 starred two of his books, I was more than happy to read/review this one, but I also insisted on buying my own copy as I had already decided to put Mr. Paxton’s work on my regular list of authors that I enjoy – I wasn’t disappointed! Ronald Paxton’s smartly written novel takes us into the hidden underbelly of Shenandoah County and its residents. Flawed, quirky, and often with secrets to keep, the characters spring to life as the story unfolds. And how it unfolds! It twists and turns , unafraid to take the path down a dark alleyway, as the list of people who might want Salem dead grows. Well written and pleasing to read, this book will not disappoint.
The clouds are building in Shenandoah County, but Salem Matthews loves a good storm!
Protagonist Salem Matthews simply desires to manage his campground and general store, enjoying the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. However, others want his property…and want it bad enough to kill for it. Longtime acquaintances aren’t the friends Matthews thought…some willing to do anything for money. A lover, a mousy housewife, a dance instructor, a bookstore owner, a boat mechanic, a prostitute with a heart, a nanny…who’s a friend and who’s a foe?
Paxton’s book keeps you guessing until the end. A classic whodunit.
