The machine comes with no instructions - not even a getting started manual. I can import my designs into it fine, but actually getting it to cut is a joke. It is inconsistent at best. I am cutting vellum - the thinnest paper you can put through - and I have to put it through at least twice, sometimes 3 times. It is a basic border, and it can't cut it. I almost sent this back the first day I used it, but it started behaving. Now it is back to its quirky ways. In some instances, it gets halfway through the design and ejects the paper. Other times, it took 5 minutes to cut out 6 words in a block print. The concept of having nicely cut paper designs is great; however, this machine will frustrate more than cooperate.

FANTASTIC for making your own decals for model tanks and planes! And everything else too!
Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2019Verified Purchase
I use this primarily for making airbrush masks for spraying on my own decals for model tanks and planes. It works INCREDIBLY well. I cannot emphasize how amazing this machine is. Although I picked it up just for making my own spray masks, I have started to use it for so much more. Literally almost anything that you can think of that you want to cut and make, you can do it using this machine. Using Armor Etch cream, I can make custom glass etchings for gifts. I can make literally any customized gift you can ever think of. I made my mom a monogrammed tumblr. I made my girlfriend a custom sprayed bottle with her initials on it. I cannot stress how amazing this machine is!! I'm constantly impressed by how intricate of designs you can cut with it too. See my third photo, the one of the knight on the horse for details. It literally cut a fraction of a millimeter with no problem. I 100% recommend this machine.

I cut a golden banner for the Lunar New Year. So easy and so much fun!
Verified Purchase
There are so many die cut machines and I finally bought this one. Only because of the size, outlook and software. Before I place the order, I'm not realize that the software is so so important when cutting. The silhouette studio surprised me. It is very user friendly and very powerful. I was assume that I have to open AI or Photoshop to pre process my art work. but after I know how does the studio works. I never have to do so.

First time ever using a silhouette product and very pleased with my purchase. I have been looking at their products for the past two weeks and couldn't resist any longer after watching youtube videos on Silhouette products. I have been messing with it off and on today trying to learn how to use it and after a few attempts, I know what I'm doing! I failed the first few attempts because I was so excited to use it that I failed to read instructions LOL. I wanted the cameo 3 but figured I would try this out first since its cheaper then upgrade if I liked this which I do! Also kept debating whether I wanted this or their competitors but decided to get this since I've heard nothing but positive reviews on Silhouette and happy with my choice. For anyone second guessing to get this, I have never used a vinyl cutting or craft machine before today and got professional results!

The Silhouette Portrait cutting machine has been an absolute delight to use. I've worked with Cricut machines in addition to other die cutters and the Silhouette Cameo (the Portrait's larger cousin) and the Portrait is, by far, the best combination of value for money. While it does require a computer to use it, if you already own a computer this is a negligible addition to its operation and it's comparable to using a printer. The Portrait is a great desktop size as well -- light and easy to transport if you're a mobile crafter and small enough to fit in a desk drawer or atop a printer or shelf for storage. The software for it is very easy to use whether you're downloading ready-made patterns or designing your own from scratch. Speaking of patterns... One of the MAJOR advantages that the Silhouette system has is its lack of physical cartridges, dies, and accessories -- you don't need to sort through drawers and bins to find that ONE pattern you're looking for, and you don't need to drop $20+ for a set of cartridges. The designs are digital and kept on your computer -- easy to search, easy to save, and simple to download with zero clutter.
The only scenario I can picture where the Portrait would be less than ideal is if you need to cut 12"z12" cardstock (as this doesn't fit in the machine) or if you are uncomfortable or unable to interact with a computer program. Personally, I've never run into a time where I needed to cut 12" wide so this hasn't been an issue. So far this little baby has cut everything I've asked of it and it's done a stellar job with nice clean edges -- highly recommended if you do any sort of crafting as a scrapbooker, teacher, or artist.

The one and only criticism I can give is that the instructional video provided by Silhouette really did not teach me what I needed to know. The great thing about that is there are a ton of YouTube videos that helped me figure out what to do.

I love this machine, and it was well worth the money. I also love the fact that it fits on my desk so easily. I mainly bought it for creating stickers for marketing my online store, but it now has me thinking that I want to start an Etsy shop for planner stickers. I have so many ideas on what I want to create with this, and it is going to provide me with hours of entertainment, and the ability to create beautiful gifts and decorations for my family and friends. Over time, this machine is going to pay for itself.

This product gave me a lot of problems. The cut would not align properly and I wasted a lot of materials because of it. I contacted customer service about my problem and was greeted with the worst customer service that I had ever experience. They gave me the typical run-around telling me to re install the software and reset the device, which is a load of bull. My portrait was under warranty and so I told them to just repair my machine or refund me. They did neither. I hope whoever reads then review to look for another product. I got rid of my portrait and decided to go with ZING KNK and never looked back.

Model Makers dream gadget

What an amazing gadget! I am an amateur architectural model maker and this machine makes it so easy for me to design a cut out models, the accuracy of the cut makes it possible to build multiple layers that are a perfect fit. I have recently branched out into modelling coaches, three layers per side, all a perfect fit. No more hours spent fiddling about with craft knives!

Meine Frau bastelt sehr viel und hatte vorher einen Plotter von Brother, so das wir hier einen Vergleich ziehen können.
Was beim Silhoutte besser ist:
- keine Onlinesoftware, sondern ein Programm, was man lokal installiert (wer wirklich viel damit macht, sollte sich die "große" Version kaufen)
- die Software unterstützt viele gängige Dateiformate
- es werden auch recht große Dateien verarbeitet, wo der Brother spätestens beim Plot scheiterte
Was uns fehlt:

This machine is awesome! Bought it to create a signpost for my daugther's wedding. I used sticky backed plastic sheets for the machine to cut out name places in fonts and also create decals. The results were very professional and was the centre of attention at her wedding reception. Daughter has now claimed this as hers

Fantastic! Some tips below...
Reviewed in Canada on September 5, 2016Verified Purchase
Fantastic item! Originally worried about the cut area but unless you are doing very wide wall art, there is no reason you couldn't stitch or do multiple parts on multiple pieces of vinyl. Will handle vinyl rolls just fine. If you're ordering the Pixscan mat (highly recommended!), be sure to order the 8" version and not the 12".
TOP TIP: De-stick the included mat by using a clean, cotton t-shirt. If not, you will have a hard time unsticking your medium (e.g. card stock) from the cutting mat. You'll likely destroy any paper based material or severely curl anything else trying to get it off the mat.
HELPFUL TIP: Ensure you have sufficient area BEHIND the unit because the mat/medium feeds straight through depending on where you are cutting. This isn't like a typical inkjet printer which feeds and rolls back forward, if you want to think of it that way.
