ATTENTION ALL: Do not waste your time and money on this unreliable drive! As a laptop refurbisher, we purchased about 100 of these drives over the period of 2 months installing them in various system builds. We were purchasing Crucial SSDs prior to this but the price difference was enticing. It is not worth it. Over the period of 4 months, we have had a return rate of 40%! These drives fail within 1-3 months - if not right on delivery! I RARELY write product reviews, however after the 40th or so drive failure, I thought it would be good to warn potential buyers. Pay the extra little bit and go for a Crucial or Samsung SSD. Our SSD failure rate with Crucial was lass than 1%.

Newer drives much slower!

Warning, possible bait and switch on this product. I bought first one a few months ago and got a solid 379MBs on the read and about 160MBs on the write. Please with the performance and price point, I ordered another one. Unfortunately, the new one is much slower and only comes in at about 225MBs. On the packaging they have removed all traces of the 550MBs read and 500MBs write. The have pulled a Kingston and have done a bait and switch.

Terrific Value -- Good performance at a great price

After my spinning-disk hard drive in my laptop decided to bite the dust shortly after installing Windows 10, I set out on a quest to find the best drive to take its place. I knew from the start that I wanted to get a solid-state drive (SSD) for the laptop since they aren't as susceptible to damage from a laptop getting jostled while it's running, they have much better performance, and they draw less power which helps the battery last longer. My only hesitation was that I didn't know whether I'd be able to find a large enough drive in my budget of $50. When I saw the Silicon Power S60's price and how well-reviewed it was, the decision to go ahead and buy an SSD was easy.

Upon getting the drive, I ran an extended S.M.A.R.T. test and checked the performance with a disk benchmarking tool. I was very pleased with the benchmarking results I saw. The read rate was nearly 470MB/s and the write rate was over 150MB/s. Since the majority of the time the computer will be reading data and not writing it, I'm very happy with this performance. It's also possible that the write speed was limited by some of the other components in my laptop and not the drive's fault. The benchmarking program also tests the average time to access random data on the drive, and it was measured at 0.05msec. When compared to the times in the neighborhood of 10msec that you'd get from a standard spinning hard drive, the difference is dramatic.

After installing Windows 10 on the new drive, I ran CrystalDiskMark to test the performance in Windows and the results were similar to what I saw on Linux. Sequential reads were measured at over 500MB/s, and sequential writes were nearly 160MB/s. Random reads/writes were quite a bit slower at a little over 130MB/s for queued random reads/writes and less than 50MB/s for non-queued random reads/writes. I've included screenshots from both CrystalDiskMark and the benchmarking I performed using Linux if you're interested in the exact numbers.

I bought this drive to increase the load times of GTA V on PC. I went from having the game on a pair of 500GB WD black hdds in RAID 0 running 225 MB/s average Read and 90 MB/s write to this. Initial testing with this drive proved disconcerting with sequential read only coming in at 210-350 MB/s and writes of 115 MB/s. This test was run with the Samsung Magician software that came with my 840 EVO. Thinking it might be Samsing not reporting correctly I ran the tests again with AIDA64 HDD benchmark tool, and linear reads came back with a solid 425 MB/s and writes of 445 MB/s. Random reads were a little slower coming in at 320 MB/s average but the speeds bounced from as low at 75 to a high of 500 MB/s and resembled an earthquake type output on the graph. This is much more erratic than that of the 840 Evo or RAID. For comparison the same tests were run on the 840 EVO and it netted 510 MS/s linear read and 515 MB/s write.

Game loading performance with the S60 is significantly improved over the RAID by cutting load times down 60-75% at 95 seconds on the ssd vs 166 seconds (for the raid). The time to load was tested by a fresh boot into OS and launching Steam which is installed on the RAID, then launching GTA V into single player mode and then into online mode was selected. To ensure the best possible results on the RAID the game files were optimized by moving them to the fastest zone on the array with Auslogics Diskkeeper prior to testing.

Bottom line is the Silicon Power S60 120GB drive while not the fastest certainly can deliver surprisingly impressive speeds for its price. If you are in need of a SSD but are on a tight budget this will do the job. It certainly performs well when compared to a far superior SSD's and it's low price point makes it very attractive alternative if you are wanting faster OS or game load times or simply need to replace a hdd on an older laptop. I cannot attest to its long term reliability but at a price point of $50+/- it's not much of a concern as long as you have a good backup of your data if it is being used for an OS drive. Definitely worth the money.
