Silicon power is probably one of the best companies for product registration and warranty support. On the flash drive is an exe that will direct you to a web page to submit your name and email. Its really that simple.
The Silicon Power USB 3.0 J80 Jewel flash Drive is definitely a very durable but fashionable device, being made of Zinc Alloy with a Titanium finish. Like the SP J07 Jewel Flash Drive, this is waterproof, dust proof, shock proof, and vibration proof. I like that this uses a true cap-less design, making it very easy to use without fearing a design flaw will obstruct usage.
I first tested the claim with this product being waterproof. I placed the flash drive in a 10 foot bucket of old water for roughly an hour, and sure enough, the drive worked perfectly after being plugged into my computer. On first glance the drive is officially 28.8GB. I then performed a test using CrystalDiskMark, a benchmarking program for testing the speed of the flash drive. This test results are from the average of 5 tests of 1000MB. I’m unsure of the speeds this drive will achieve because there aren’t any claims on the website or packaging.
Read: 39.24 MB/s
Write: 10.22 MB/s
The write speed of 10.22 MB/s is abysmal for a US 3.0 drive. These are speeds you’d see for USB 2.0, not USB 3.0.
▶ Final Thoughts
I like the build of the drive but not the performance. I can’t give a good rating to a flash drive that gets USB 2.0 speeds, which is why this gets a 3 star rating. Buy this product only if you need the durability aspect.
+ Very unique but sturdy design.
+ Waterproof, dust proof, shock proof, vibration proof
+ Uses true cap-less design.
- Flash drive speeds were very slow for a USB 3.0 device
I was provided a sample in exchange for a thorough and honest review.
That said, if you want small, and decent performance, this is a great drive. I paid $25 for 64gb, or 40 cents a gigabyte. Lastly... FORMAT THIS DRIVE. It came FAT32 formatted. Running Xbench on my Mac showed different performance depending on if I left it FAT32, formatted it Mac Extended, or formatted it to ExFat.
FAT32 on my Mac provided the worst performance (52.71) overall) and did especially poor on sequential reads/writes. It did much better on random however.
ExFat came in second, overall, at 54.84, but actually performed tops in Random Read/Writes, and is PC and Mac compatible, so I went with that. Mac native scored the best performance for sequential, and overall the best overall score (57.32) but lagged ExFat in random.
Here are the raw numbers:
Uncached Sequential Write - 76.82 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Sequential Write - 40.39 MB/sec [256K blocks]
Uncached Sequential Read - 9.25 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Sequential Read - 93.00 MB/sec [256K blocks]
Uncached Random Write - 1.41 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Random Write - 23.83 MB/sec [256K blocks]
Uncached Random Read - 3.86 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Random Read - 70.14 MB/sec [256K blocks]
Uncached Sequential Write - 110.82 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Sequential Write - 52.92 MB/sec [256K blocks]
Uncached Sequential Read - 12.70 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Sequential Read - 103.55 MB/sec [256K blocks]
Uncached Random Write - 1.42 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Random Write - 19.54 MB/sec [256K blocks]
Uncached Random Read - 3.66 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Random Read - 67.74 MB/sec [256K blocks]
Uncached Sequential Write - 93.11 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Sequential Write - 40.13 MB/sec [256K blocks]
Uncached Sequential Read - 10.26 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Sequential Read - 96.90 MB/sec [256K blocks]
Uncached Random Write - 1.50 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Random Write - 19.74 MB/sec [256K blocks]
Uncached Random Read - 3.87 MB/sec [4K blocks]
Uncached Random Read - 69.18 MB/sec [256K blocks]
That said, this drive DOES NOT PROVIDE USB 3.0 READ/WRITE SPEEDS. I feel I was misled with this drive being labels as USB 3.0, when the max read/write speeds I'm able to achieve are around 18 MB/s. My true USB 3.0 external drive allows me to write at around 200 MB/s from all the same ports so I know the problem is with the drive itself, not my computer.
If you just want a flash drive to keep handy, this thing does the job, but don't buy it expecting USB 3.0 speeds. The labeling of this product is flat out misleading.
