Summary:

I like the drive, I like it's color, I like the lifetime warranty, I like that this model performs better than the competition at the equivalent price range... but it's NOT good for a key chain and it is not very well constructed.. hence I would not buy another one based on those last demerits.

Details and Real World Testing:

The SP Marvel M50 is a good speedster when ranked against the competition in the same discounted sale range. But there are some caveats. The first being: the advertised read-write speeds on this product do NOT match the tests I ran with Crystal Diskmark, v5.12, Fact: I never saw anything close to 60 MB sec write speeds while I monitored LIVE file transfers in Windows. For very brief moments I saw close to 40 MB sec... which is still superb for a flash drive in this price range.

As an owner of other Silicon Power products, specifically the solid, one-piece aluminum Silicon Power Jewel 80 (HIGHLY RECOMMEND)... I found that the Jewel 80 was more durable and sometimes faster than the Marvel M50 when writing certain file types.

Upon first insertion into to a quality system, my computer reported that the drive was corrupted. After running the repair, all seemed fine, but it corrupted again shortly later during tests. To remedy this, I used windows to do a re-format and opted for the long format (not fast) which formats the actual sectors instead of wiping the file records.

The next thing I did was test the file transfer speeds. My main computer is a modern high power developer's machine with data stored on a Samsung Pro 840 SSD. In the first tests after the hard format of the Marvel, the write speeds were depressing. To remedy this, I did a long format using the NTFS file system instead of FAT32. I highly recommend this to anyone who uses this drive to store a large collection of SMALL files.

After running transfers a second time, I timed the activity from start to completion using my 'tools and utilities master collection.' Said master collection has about 3,800 files and 600 folders, all nested within it's single folder label. The volume adds up to about 4.8 GB... whereby half the files are small and compressed. Naturally, this slows down the transfer process. The new results were encouraging, as the NTFS format shortened my transfer time by 3 minutes. The new transfer time was 5 minutes, nearly spot on. Afterwards. I repeated this test on three other Jewel 80 drives I previously bought and got fairly much the same result, though Crystal Diskmark seemed to indicate the Jewel 80 was faster (in theory.)

The short comings of the Marvel M50 that for me are a deal breaker:

Unlike the Jewel 80, which is made for key chains, the Marvel's lanyard hole at the top will not accommodate the thickness of normal key chain rings. Furthermore, I am not a fan of USB drives that either slide out or have caps. This one has a cap. Yes, I knew that from the get go, but I bought it for the 'advertised transfer speeds.' Regardless, the cap was not only just dissatisfying.. it is also flawed... evident when the interior part of the cap slipped from its aluminum casing and stubbornly stuck to the USB plug. Yes, it was easy to slip it back inside the cap.. and since this drive stays at home, this is NOT a concern.

The last thing I don't like about the drive is how it feels when inserted into a USB port. As I plug it in, my fingers falsely sense it is not fully inserted. In addition, the aluminum is super thin and has a tactile fragility. My impressions is with too much force I will crush or damage the product.

If the Marvel is sold as the discounted price I originally purchased, which is around $11 to $12, then this model is faster than most other flash drives in its class. However, Silicon Power's own Jewel 80 is better quality...in lieu of similar discounted sales pricing.

If crazy fast WRITE speeds is your mission... if you plan to be adding and wiping data frequently, there is only ONE model on the planet that exceeds every other flash product. Since SP does not offer a high performance product in this category, I will NOT insult the company by mentioning the brand or model of that other product.

If anyone from SP is reading my review, I would like to see a hyper enhanced version of the Jewel 80, something to compete with the baddest boys in the market..

I bought one of these and then ordered another. I got the first one to put all my music on. I found that using my USB 3.0 port that it loaded up very quickly compared to the older 2.0 USB flash drives that I have. It played in the car okay, although I would not normally haul around every single album I own on one usb drive. I prefer to make playlists on smaller usb drives for the car. But I wanted to see if the thing would work so I tried it out. With so much music on there it was hard to sort it out. But you sure could play music for hours, days, weeks! My total music collection filled a little over half of this drive. So there is still a boatload of room on it. I bought a second one to have a backup for the music collection.

My criticism of this drive is that it is quite small to hang onto. There is only a tiny place at the end to attach a string or cord. I would prefer a larger loop that could go on a keyring for example. Also, when you take off the lid, it does not seem to fit over the butt end for storage while the drive is in use. But all of this is forgivable and I still give it a five because it works so well and the price point cannot be beat for a 32 GB 3.0 drive at this time.

This is a GREAT DRIVE for an AMAZING PRICE! However, the only reason I am not giving it 5 stars is that the actual Read and write Speeds are a bit lower then stated when actually transferring files. They are supposed to be a max of 60 write, and 90 read. Out of the box, and plugged into my WIN 7 Tech Laptop, I could only get an average of 18MB/s write, and 29MB/s read, plugged into USB3.0 ports of course. The drives come formatted as Fat32. When I formatted them to NTFS, I got that to almost double, but still couldn't get it to max out at the advertised speed of 90/60. I tested with a variety of 2 to 4GB HD movies, and a few GBs of mp3 albums. I then tested a variety of files on 2 other Windows 7 64bit machines transfiguring to and from Sata 6GB/s drives. Then I tested them on a Fedora and an Ubuntu machine (Formatted FAT32) and got the same results as my first test.

I have seen other reviews that said these drives exceeded the 90/60 MB/s read/write, and I wish that was true with me. The most I could get was 58/40 MB/s read/write, and that was with the drives formatted NTFS in Windows 7 with the better performer policy set. However, with that being said, this drive still runs circles around any of my USB2 drives, and around my other USB3 flash drives from PNY that I paid more money for! So I still think this is an EXCELLENT quality drive for the price, and would definitely give it 5 stars if I could get it to transfer at the advertised speeds.

Quick note: When plugged into a USB2 port with any File System Format (I tested Fat32, eXfat, and NTFS), it maxes out faster then I've ever seen any USB2.0 flash drive do, it transfers at around 30/30 MB/s Read Write,(And that was consistent across Win7, Win8, Linux, and Android), so even if all you have is USB 2.0 ports, I Would Highly recommend this drive! I bought 2 of the 16GB, now I'm going to grab the 64GB! GREAT PRODUCT!

Quick Note 2: In case your wondering, this drive works PERFECTLY with OTG adapters for Android. I tried it on my LG G3, and Optimus G pro, and it worked out of the box! Of course you have to keep it formatted fat 32 or exFat to read or write to it with Android, but as long as you keep it as Fat, it works out of the box.
