Over the surface, it looks like a well-built reliable product. I ordered 10 of these in June for my technicians and now three months later, suddenly they are starting to die one by one. So far 3 drives have failed in the past two weeks one after the other. The 2.5 in. drive inside the enclosure just stops spinning and won't work anymore even though the LED light comes on. Changed cables, tried different computers, different USB ports, etc. I understand that some times you might get a bad apple, but 3 out of 10 so far died and who knows how many more in the next few months? That's a 30% failure rate which is unacceptable. Looks like the company better issue a recall on these. They use Samsung Momentus drives internally and it seems like Silicon Power didn't do their due diligence to find out how bad these are. I am giving it two stars instead of one because of the nice rugged construction and the USB port is not the flimsy micro USB crap. UPDATE 11/17/14: Just had another drive fail. This is the 4th drive to die. I found out it is the Samsung Momentus drive that just dies without warning and it doesn't spin up. The previous three drives that died were replaced by the company under warranty. Let's see how long they last. I am totally blaming this on the terrible Samsung Momentous drive. I have the 1TB model which when formatted in Windows using NTFS ended up being 932GBs. »The outer casing consists of hard plastic and the green silicone material you can see in the photos. The green silicone is actually what is surrounding the hard drive inside, protecting it from drops and is how the 'suspension system' works. The green silicone also has a slot that goes all the way around which is used to hold onto the included USB 3.0 cable using 2 clips. The 2 plastic pieces simply screw into each other on each side using 4 screws. The USB port has a flap in the silicone to keep it closed and free of dust when not in use. There are also 2 openings on the bottom plastic part where 2 green strips come through and provide grip on whatever surface you put it on, preventing slips. Simple and effective design for protection, grip and convenience. »There is no external powered needed for this, power it taken from the USB port on whatever device you are using it with »Copying to and from the drive was speedy and I the speeds I received when running a speed test were about what I expected for a traditional hard drive over USB 3.0. HD lasted for three or four weeks then the problems ...

HD lasted for three or four weeks then the problems started. The HD began having problems randomly recognizing the 3.0 USB on my PC. I thought it might be the drivers. I uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail. I then tested the HD on my laptop 3.0 and the same thing occurred. I attempted to contact SP twice by email and once by phone (phone contact was such a joke). I'm going to attempt a final time before contacting Amazon to request a refund. This drive has given me so much grief. I formatted twice, backed up content and then transferred twice. Both times this drive failed to either stay connected or would randomly disconnect. I have a Western Digital 1 TB that is nearly 2 years old and is used specifically for video and music with continual use as a direct play drive and it works flawlessly. I ultimately will be going back to a WD Passport for a secondary drive.

Mac users- Potentially Good Cost Alternative to Thunderbolt!

I have had this unit for little more than 24 hours so this is very preliminary. I am running on a Mac and surprisingly the read/write speeds were between 125 and 135Mbs using Blackmagic speed test. This is reformatted as HFS+. This is about equal or better than my Transcend 2TB Thunderbolt/USB through the Thunderbolt cable at less than half the price. I will be buying a second drive and returning the Transcend. My main concerns are longevity. Other reviews talk about totally failure which is unacceptable. Total failure after months is horrendous. I have usually found that when a USB drive fails with Mac, you can run disk repair. Most do not repair but they mount so you can get most of your data off. I have had USB drives last months and others last years, bust seldom lost data.

I will keep this updated if warranted. For now- its fast and runs cool compared to the Transcend which I have read is one of the fastest Thunderbolt drives; However you can fry an egg on it if your are transferring a couple hundred GB of data.

Works like a charm with no drama. It's my archived data storage M-14 now (except the magazine does not drop out when you least expect it). .

Whatever you do, never ever forget to format your new external hard drive or USB stick prior to loading data onto it unless you want to spend three days finding out how to use freeware data retrieval programmes. Sounds obvious but it is easy to forget to do so. You only forget to do so when you load essential data onto it then your computer tells you that it cannot read the external drive.

Solid. Needs a formatting tweak to copy huge files

This is an early review, I have just had it for a few day, but want to give buyers a little trick of the trade I learned and needed to make it function as I needed, thanks to the miracle of the internet and some YouTube dude named Sohel Yadav.

It does not come with software and the default settings will not allow copying of extra large files (>4 GB, like my local mail backup folder) unless you do a reconfiguration before you use it:
1. Go to Windows Explorer
2. Put the cursor over the drive (e.g."E:") and right click, then click on "Format..."
3. Switch the file system type to "NTFS" if it isn't already (it was the default for me)
4. Switch the allocation unit size from 4096 bytes to "default allocation size"

After my backup drive was knocked off the shelf, I decided to get the Rugged Armor 1TB to avoid a repeat incident.
I have seen these around during various indoor and outdoor operations both private, corporate, and government which gave me some confidence in purchasing. My initial and mitigated issue was that the drive's file name character size limit seemed conservative compared to my Western Digital. unit. (It was between 32 and 64 characters). Easily fixed with a quick rename and elimination of spaces. Very happy that this drive uses a standard USB Type A to Type A connections and DOES NOT require an additional power adapter. I should note that the unit is USB 2.0, but its on my wifi network so the throughput is kind of moot. I bring up the connections, since the Western Digital unit has a proprietary USB 3.0 interface.
Overall, great unit and the satisfaction of being able to survive a physical incident. Although, I am NOT going to put it to the test.

Horrible product.

All the sudden stopped working. Started clicking and couldnt be recognized by several different computers. We lost about 6 months of work on this. It is durable in the sense it seems well made. Never dropped, never banged on anything. Had it on a a desk and just stopped working. Geek Squad said just to open it and see would be $130 and after that to "maybe" recover some files could be up to several hundreds. Horrible product.
