I ordered my A80 1TB HDD on February 13th and it arrived February 16th. So, right off the back their was a prompt and quick delivery of the product. When I opened the package I was very pleased to see the sleek, clean, ergonomic design but at the same time I could tell that this unit holds a solid quality feel. It comes with 2 USB 3.0 Super speed cables. 1 of which rests beautifully inside the side of the HDD case. Not only does the Silicon-Power A80 use the Asmedia AS1051 processor they are also one of the first USB 3.0 chipset certified manufacturers. Silicon-Power promises that this unit meets the water resistant standard and the U.S. military drop-test standards. I will run both the drop test and water test on video for this review.(COMING SOON)
Before I run the drop and water tests I wanted to run a Benchmarking test. So, I used HD Tach. Now remember, anyone running any benchmark tests must understand that the mileage depends on hardware configuration. Basically, what type of computer hardware and software setup you're running.
Windows 7 Ultimate Service pack 1 32Bit OS
2.67 GHz Intel Core2 Duo
ASUSTeK P5Q SE2 MOBO
1TB Silicon Power Armor A80 USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive : AVG Sequential Read 89.2 MB/S
AVG Sequential Write 88.4 MB/S
Burst Speed 127.3 MB/S
The result of this test helps me see that this unit IS FAST!!
I did some further comparison to give people an idea of real time transfer rates.
5GB File size -> USB 2.0 External HDD = 14:05 minutes
5GB File size -> USB 3.0 External HDD = 4:25 minutes
It took about 3x longer to transfer a 5GB file using USB 2.0
My suggestion to anyone looking for a high quality and durable External HDD. Get the A80!
I'm 100% confident in the products Silicon-Power produces.
* Others have done more thorough performance metrics than I can possibly do so I'll leave that to them. I was able to copy about 30GB to this for testing in about 10 minutes.
* Unit says it's shockproof. Let's test that! (All tests performed so as to make the unit land on a corner)
** From 3 feet onto carpet: PASSED
** From 7 feet onto carpet: PASSED
** From 3 feet onto wood: PASSED
** From 7 feet onto wood: PASSED
* Unit says doesn't mind external pressure. Let's stand on it!
** I put all my 250 pounds on one heel on the case of this drive and it felt pretty solid. I did notice that one of the plastic sides bowed out a bit but I don't know if that was during drop testing or during crush test. Either way, I was able to pop it back in place without a problem. PASSED
** I don't have an elephant as shown on the cover, so I can't add much more to this series of tests.
* Unit says it's waterproof. Let's throw it in the sink! (Note that it has a rubber cover for the USB Port. This worries me a bit.)
** Water temperature about 100F. Depth to top of unit: 2 inches. Total time under water: 120 seconds. PASSED
At this point it still works, serves up files like a champ. Ran the window error checking on it and it came back clean.
Now let's get serious. Let's take it out to the parking lot and do some drop tests on concrete.
* Drop tests round 2
** From 3 feet onto concrete: PASSED, case is rather scuffed
** From 7 feet onto concrete: PASSED, this ended up as an end-drop test, case really scuffed up.
** Another disk scan reveals no problems.
** From 12 feet onto concrete: FAILED, the case cracked at the corner and the disk was unreadable. Note that I conducted this test 3 times and it failed on the third test.
In summary, the unit survived multiple tests without issues until the testing required became unrealistic. The unit's survivability exceeds stated specifications by at least twice.
PS: I hope my review was helpful. If it was not, then please let me know what I left out that you’d want to know. I always aim to improve.
Got to get back to work - hope this helps.
