First, make sure you have write caching on. This is operating system-specific but really improves the performance.
Second, on macOS, make sure if you're doing a raw write, use /dev/rdsk not /dev/dsk. The former is a more direct access to the disk than the latter, and made me wonder early-on if my dd command was slow because this was a bad unit. Turns out the problem was with my command, and once I used the right device node, the performance was actually on par with what they advertise.
Lastly, avoid using FAT32 as a filesystem. It's not very reliable, and you can lose data pretty easily. I recommend NTFS or HFS+ depending on what devices you'll be using it with.
It's great for transferring data between Macs and PCs, or installing operating systems on either one. I've had a good experience with this device in various typical file transfer scenarios over the months I've had it.
1GB file 28 vs 76 seconds
3GB file 75 vs 204 seconds
100 small files, 9 vs 23 seconds
I just with they had made the key ring a bit smaller.
UPDATE: I tried the UGREEN 64GB and it outperformed the Silicon Power C80. So, if you want a faster drive, buy the bigger drive.
I checked them in multiple devices and in different USB ports (all USB 3.0 capable) and this is what I found, they are very inconsistent in quality.
One of the drives reports it is 28.8GB in size and is USB 3.0 came named USB DISK and the other reports a size of 30.2GB but not showing as USB 3.0 and did not already have a name on the drive.
Just to be thorough, the drive correctly reporting as 3.0 had a couple of files on it labelled as being created on the 13th of August 2016 and the other drive not showing up as USB 3.0 had the exact same files very similar file size etc. (size on disk value was slightly smaller than the first drive) these were created 4th August 2016.
I will update if the drives start malfunctioning or have any problems or if they workout fine after some time using them, but I do have to warn anyone buying, be aware there are slight inconsistencies with the available size on the drive (certainly not the same for each) and possibility that some are being shipped that may not even be USB 3.0, otherwise why would one be reporting it is and the other not showing the same info?
I checked this several times
I am using a MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 10.9.5 and it mounted immediately. It is great that it supports USB 3 speeds, because I work with video file that are quite large, and I hate waiting for a slow USB 2 drive to copy files. After all, time is money. It copied a 1.4 GB file in less than a minute, and I found that impressive.
I was also able to play back a 1920 x 1080 QuickTime ProRes 422 movie at 29.97 fps and it played as smooth as if it was from an regular hard drive. I know that would not happen with a USB 2 thumb drive.
I noticed on the package that this product is also waterproof, but I hope you'll excuse me if I don't hurry to test that feature. Though honestly, I have had thumb drives that I forgot were in my pants pocket, and they wound up going through the laundry wash. So, it's good to know that this product would survive that. LOL
