Color: We absolutely love the beautiful bright, rainbow, palette of this particular set. We do some food photography and recipe development and the colors just pop on camera. We'd like to buy a few more sets so we can actually make several batches/varieties of a popcicle recipe at once and have them easily identified by outer pop color.
Size: At 8 inches and with a 3.4oz capacity, these are not too big, and not too small. Some of the product's photos show the pops with the bottoms folded down to help them stand in glasses- one could easily fill these halfway for smaller portions for children, if desired.
Design: I always thought 'push pop' style molds would be messy and impossible to use practically. The silicone material of these molds is thicker than we had anticipated (so I suspect they will hold up for a long time, but also may make them freeze slower than alternative brands/models.) The cap is about 1 inch deep and threaded, though the threading is really more of a grip to ensure that the seal is air tight and no liquid can escape or drip when turned upside down. We tried this theory by turning a mold with grape juice upside down and placing it in the freezer to great results. Do keep in mind, however, that placing these on their side may cause uneven Popsicle or disruption of any layering in progress with various recipes.
*We especially loves that any melting or dripping was caught inside the mold, during enjoyment, and the eating experience was quite mess free. And, because these are capped, children could return them to the freezer if the pop was too big for one sitting.
*To address some concerns about how to store these while freezing. These ARE drip proof, even with thin bases such as fruit juices, and may be placed on their side. However, since the direction, and we, suggest that you leave about a 1 inch gap from fill level to the rim (to allow for expanding in freezing) we recommend you store them upright for the most uniform pop. The brand DOES make and sell a stand for these silicone mighty pop molds (currently it's around $14 at the time of this review,) which we suggest investing in if you do a lot of recipe or photography involving pops. Otherwise, we have stored ours in a very thick stein/glass in the freezer door, until frozen, then stack them on their side in the freezer.
Materials: We love the food grade silicone pop molds! Unlike some reviewers we had no issue with sticking and tried 3 common pop bases- creamy (Vegan coconut milk, cookies and cream pops,) fruity (blackberries and yogurt,) and juice (grape juice.) All 3 removed beautifully from the sleeve with minimal effort after just 1 minute sitting, sealed, on the counter at room temperature. We didn't see much need for the warm water trick. We found taking the mold and rolling between one's hands for a few seconds, then pinching the pop upward from the very tip released a uniform and easy Popsicle.
*We cleaned these by soaking them in a warm soap bath for a few minutes, then rinsing and placing them on the counter to dry- however, these are dishwasher safe.
*We observed NO odor upon unboxing, or any odor/taste transfer. We DID clean the molds prior to first use, as is customary with any food accessory, and per the instructions.
In the end these silicone Popsicle molds put all of our reservations about 'push pop' style frozen treats to rest. These are durable, easy to use and clean, and have inspired us to make many more (healthy) frozen treats at home. Not only will we be saving money making our desserts at home, but we will be using our own preservative free ingredients :) It should be noted the included recipe booklet is a download that can be claimed after purchase (The website and information can be located on the box.) And speaking of boxes, we loved that these did not come in a plastic baggie in an envelope- these were professionally packaged and great for gifting. We will be ordering more! I received these molds free of charge in hopes I would share my honest experiences, which I have done.
I found these and feel they work pretty well and am able to put exactly what I want in them. I was able to stand them all up in a Ziploc Twist 'N Loc Medium Round Container. My go-to recipe follows:
-Small Tub of Whipped Topping
-3/4 to 1 cup milk (may need to up milk if too thick)
-1 to 1 1/2 cups fruit of your choice (have used strawberries, blueberries and mango) (frozen fruit will make it thicker when blending)
-sweeten to taste (I use a tablespoon or 2 depending on the sweetness of fruit used) with maple syrup, honey or agave (kiddo is okay without, but adults may want it sweeter)
-blend until smooth
This will fill more than just 6 molds, so I actually bought a second set. Using 3/4 cup milk and 1 cup fruit, I filled 8 molds and if you up either ingredient, you can fill a few more. Now when I get down to 1 or 2 popsicles, I can whip up a new batch so we are never without our new favorite treat!
I have noticed that some odors can get absorbed when washing in the dishwasher, so I will probably stick to hand washing or try baking soda or vinegar to get the odors out. Its not extreme, but I did notice it in a couple of them. Didn't keep me from buying another set!
IMPORTANT: Do your own research regarding what sweeteners you can give your children under 1-years old. Its a pretty common recommendation that you NOT give honey to children under one. The jury is out on maple syrup and agave.
I'd recommend these to anyone who wants something reusable and especially to moms of kids who have food allergies or problems with food dyes. No worries about ingredients that aren't listed.
