Lovely. Thoroughly engaging. Actually cared about the mystery a bit, which is saying something. Bloodstone has joined Holmes, Wolfe, and Marlowe in my pantheon of detectives I love.
Reading on into the second chapter, I was introduced to her protagonist, Rudyard "Ruddy" Bloodstone, and I fell in love. He and his partner, Archie, remind me so much of my husband and his final homicide partner, George, who are both now retired. Being a former detective, Chris has a vast personal knowledge of how law enforcement works and how to express it on paper.
Chris has a God-given talent for writing and this book is superbly written and easy to read. It has enough twists, turns and humor to offset the horror of the subject of murder to keep readers inspired to read just one more chapter. This is a beautifully written book and will keep you glued to the pages to the very end. I cannot wait to read another Bloodstone book and I hope one is coming soon. I highly recommend this book as a fascinating reading experience.

P.S. I bought a copy to have as my own because it's that good. And I like to re-read my favs.
At first I was pulled in by the alluringly gorgeous cover. Then by the setting, as I’ve always been fascinated by Victorian London–its fog, narrow streets and dark alleys…perfect for a murder story.
Well, Karlsen didn’t disappoint. Truth be told, of all her books, I think this is her best, and I was hooked from the start and had trouble putting it down. I’m not going to repeat the plot, since readers can learn that from the description. Instead, I’d like to talk about the structure of the book and the author’s writing style, among other things.
The story is told using multiple points of view–including that of the murderer. But the author focuses on one POV per chapter. I’ve found that this technique works better with thrillers. Karlsen did an excellent job getting in the mind of the killer, a being with no conscience, no remorse. Some of his entries, the coldness in them, are quite chilling. Then we have Detective Inspector Rudyard Bloodstone and his side kick. I really liked Bloodstone. He’s cool and methodical, but he’s also a good man searching for justice. I found the police procedural and interrogations, as well as the dynamics of the police force and their possible corruption when dealing with members of the nobility, most believable and well researched (many aspects of police investigation are quite different nowadays). Of course, Victorian London comes to life in vivid color and details, so much so that the setting almost becomes another character. The story moves at a nicely quick pace, and will keep readers turning pages until the very surprising and satisfying ending. Highly recommended!
