Gwen was truly a strong character for pushing past Edward’s fears to find the passionate man she had fallen for. Her drive to draw Edward out of his shell allowed them the find the intimacy they had shared through their letters and bring it into the real world. The author does touch on the ideas of class barriers and women’s rights within the Victorian age, but they are never heavy-handed so as to remove the reader from the fantasy of these two lonely souls finding one another.
The novella’s length did work against it as far as fully developing both characters. I would have loved more backstory about Edward’s accident, Gwen’s struggles to find work in the field she loved and more development of their romance once they had met face to face. I also felt there was a need for secondary characters that interacted with the main characters more than just Gwen’s prejudiced boss. They could have added dimension to the story rather than just the single string that we followed to the end.
All that considered, I would highly recommend this novella to anyone looking for a sweet romance to pass a few hours with.
This was a very pleasurable read, I really enjoyed being inside Gwen's mind and the author's voice. It was just the right pace for such a short story, taking it slow at times to savor the characters. We get to read some Edward POV and I didn't think it was necessary, but was a nice addiction anyways. It's clear why Gwen fall in love with his letters, but not how she falls for the hero. I particularly don't think the title nor the book cover makes this book justice: it's sweet, romantic and with a small touch of sensuality. I would've enjoyed to see a sex scene between them.
I'm intrigued to read more by Cassandra Dean and the Silk series.

Like the rest of the SILK series, I wish this was longer!! Ms. Dean’s ability to craft a scene make it seem as if I’m really there watching everything transpire. Gwen is wickedly intelligent, but must hide her intelligence since society frowns on a well-educated woman. She is kind and compassionate and a perfect partner for Edward. Edward reminded me a bit of Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice – imperious and aloof, but hiding a deep well of emotion and feeling behind the strictures placed upon him by society and his title. Together, they make an excellent couple – Edward encourages Gwen’s expression of her intelligence and love of the law and Gwen gives Edward the confidence to see beyond the scars on his face and embrace social outings once more.
A very sweet & romantic Victorian tale. Highly recommended!
