At a time when REAL Soul Music appeared to be going into decline, Frankie Beverly and Maze released this wonderful CD which was very well received. By itself, the gorgeous "Can't Get Over You" justifies buying the CD but there are other great songs here as well. Frankie Beverly is most certainly one of the greatest Soul singers of our time--but he is also criminally underrated. A classic CD to enjoy time and again (nearly 20 years after its original release it still sounds great!).

Silky Soul is a must have for any Maze lover. The songs and the music is so true to the silky style of Maze/Featuring Frankie Beverly. Some of the most soulful and sweetest lyrics I've ever been exposed to.

Maze featuring Frankie Beverly is unique soulful jazzy music that is not going to win over many Brittany Spears fans but should please anyone who likes well arranged funky 80's soul.Their somewhat Miles Davis like horn player really sounds superb on this release. The song "Mandela" is my favourite track being a harmonious call to release the then imprisoned South African leader with Beverlys' voice sounding passionate and emotive next to a beautiful chorus of backup singers.Joy and Pain is for me their finest hour, however this C.D.contains some fine moments also in spite of other reviews disparaging their mid 80's output.

I am an avid fan of Frankie Beverly and Maze's music, so adding this to my collection was a great choice. The tribute and title song Silky soul dedicated to Marvin Gaye is a beautiful relaxing memory to the man whose music was and still is phenomenal.
The entire soundtrack is worth listening to, it's relaxing and soothing to say the least.
A great buy for any R&B collection.

As one of the bands that spanned from the late 70's into the middle of the 80's,Frankie Beverley and Maze created a very interesting type of sound during their heyday. It was a mixture of some of the instrumental approach of jazzy 70's funky soul and Beverley's emphasis on the gospel style vocal based soul balladry of a decade or so before. In a lot of ways, the band helped to develop the quiet storm genre that Smokey Robinson had coined. By the end of the 80's? Quiet Storm was an official radio format. And Maze were still a band with an artistic direction of their own. And,after a five year absence from having made a complete studio album (save a live side of a 2 album 1986 live album recorded in LA) this would be their official closer to their second proper decade as a bona fide studio band.

The title song starts out the album with a lyrical and music tribute to Marvin Gaye-as the rhythm and melody have the jazzy cinematic soul balladry approach of the basic groove for Marvin's classic song and album 'What's Going On'. "Can't Get Over You" and "Just Us" and "Change Our Ways" are all mid to low tempo slow grooves in Maze's signature style. "Somebody Else's Arms" has just a tad more of a sway about a similar approach, and features a melody line expanded from the jazzy melody of Ambrosia's "Biggest Part Of Me" from the sound of things. "Midnight" is a melodic probing instrumental showcasing a synthesizer horn line actually playing some jazzy trumpet style simulations-contrasting both a natural and mechanical flavor of music.

"Love's On The Run" has a shuffling pop/go-go style rhythm to it and like somewhat bassier and harder edged "Songs Of Love" represent this albums more uptempo side.

I choose this CD because it reminds me of Marvin Gaye and Frankie Beverly's Silky voice just really describes his honoring of Mr. Gaye. I love all of Maze's music but this one CD just sounds so, so good!
