When I was 12 years old, I was in a hopeless, neglectful, and oftentimes abusive household. This book changed my world. With it, I moved through life from having nothing to getting a scholarship to USC, get into Yale, get a full-time stable corporate job, and now a successful entrepreneur.
I've followed the spiritual/consciousness evolution teaching that has shown up over the years, and Silva Mind Control still contain effective techniques that i DO NOT see reflected in mainstream materials (law of attraction, etc etc). This stuff is very powerful.
I am buying multiple copies to gift to those I love.
If you get this book and have an open mind
It’s a great opportunity to expand ones mind to positivity and concentration it also is a form of meditation. I find it energizing and
Peaceful. Have been rereading it over and over do enjoy the Silva method
As long as you don't read expecting a literary masterpiece, this is a pretty decent little book - with techniques explained well enough that you can actually begin to USE them. I was thrilled about the extra online support from the Silva group (Jose is no longer alive) -- UNTIL the email avalanche! Good stuff, no doubt, but I am DROWNING in good stuff sent by email!! (Unless you have more time for "special offers" than I, get the book and try to stay off the lists -- jus' sayin')
DISCLAIMER: As the ADD Poster Girl, I read any of the "DO THIS and everything will come under your volitional control" methods with a bit of defensiveness and more than a grain of salt, after almost 4 decades of "You're not really trying." EVEN when they're not saying that -- and this book is not (even though many "followers" of the Silva Method will). I'm trying to write a fair review and leave my personal reactions "outside the door" unless they were prompted directly by the book itself.
I am *also* trying to review the BOOK and not the "book and organization" - so forgive me if I inadvertently blur the lines a bit -- and try to remember that ANY review is simply one person's reaction, not a FACT about *any* book.
BEST THINGS ABOUT THE BOOK
As the book that launched the Silva empire, it was fascinating to read the background behind a method of self-actualization that comes highly recommended by many, and that MANY people I respect find highly effective across the board. I can use *some* but not all of it (hold for details on that).
With a background steeped in neurology, I was especially impressed with how neatly Silva's techniques dovetail with science that wasn't available until LONG after the book was penned - neuroplasticity chief among them (the idea that the brain continues to change and grow, EVEN after puberty) - which is a relatively new scientific "fact" despite the fact that it has been observable for MANY years.
Don't expect links to scientific evidence, however - that's NOT what this book is trying to do. It's purpose seems to be SHARING, not proving the worthiness of the information it shares.
I believe its unfair to discount the fact that Silva is generously and transparently disclosing what happens in a seminar (that they make a LOT more money offering live) simply because he doesn't *also* link chapter and verse of their methods to scientific studies. (They even disclose the details of the schedule, for heaven's sakes!) Unlike a few other reviewers, I didn't feel like he was attempting to sell me on a seminar, simply to awaken an interest in the possibility. And the book DID do that for me (not TO me, as some might say).
I was also impressed by Jose's humanity - I came away believing that this was a man genuinely interested more in making a difference - first for his family, and later for the world at large -- than in making a killing financially.
The fact that he began as a relatively uneducated Hispanic mechanic and self-educated to the point where he was invited to speak to higher learning organizations is quite amazing, as is the fact that he simply got out there and DID it. He didn't agonize over preparing himself to win literary awards, he simply shared what he had learned the best way he knew how. That COUNTS with me, and seems a reason TO read the book, not to discount it.
I also found the report of the effectiveness of the technique with individuals with some fairly serious psychiatric diagnoses more than fascinating (but not surprising). What WAS surprising was the fact that Silva got a shrink on board to see if it was "safe." I liked that immensely.
This book doesn't give you data you can go check up on very well, but there's enough it does give you that you could probably follow the trail, if that's your interest (although another book would probably be better for those of you in the "prove it to me" camp. I thank you for your due diligence, but this is simply not the book for you guys.)
Admittedly, there is some "woo woo" to this book which may annoy more than a few "science types;" it intrigued and delighted me. (Hypnosis is pretty "woo woo" too, yet it works for many, right?) Physics and metaphysics get friendlier every year, and both placebo and nocebo effects are now well documented, so I'm willing to give almost anything an honest attempt before I say it doesn't work for ME -- and I'm not *ever* going to believe that anybody but you is the authority on what works for YOU.
After all, I don't have to believe in electricity for you to turn on a light, and it would be downright dumb for either of us to sit in the dark simply because we can't explain the process to the satisfaction of a scientist.
What Didn't Work for me
The emphasis on the visual modality will always bother me. I *can* visualize (and do in certain arenas that demand it), but I actually think in WORDS, left to my own devices, not pictures. Really! If you've read anything by Oliver Sachs (or the Brain Injury recovery experts), you will find validation for the insistence of those of us who are NOT visual-dominants that not everyone visualizes as a dominant modality - for a variety of brain-based reasons - and not *everyone* CAN, by the way.
Perhaps we can be taught to (metaphorically) rub our stomachs while we pat our heads, but I've never understood the importance of being able to do so. Left-handers used to be taught to write with their right hands, too, but it only muddied the neuro-cognitive waters in a number of ways we are only beginning to understand. Neurodiversity is fairly well established - lets stop quibbling over method and work with folks in the way they work BEST is my mantra.
What DID Work for me
The Silva Method of accessing the alpha state was amazing for me - worked the first time I tried it. I suffer from a life-long, practically intractable sleep-timing disorder, and this is one of the FEW techniques that have ever helped me fall asleep with any intentionality what-so-ever!
The technique is designed to help you learn to remain conscious in alpha, not to drift off to sleep, by the way, but if you have problems transitioning from waking to sleeping, this book is worth its weight in gold simply to learn their method of how to get into alpha whenever you need to (which seems to be essential to go further "down," brain-wave wise, to the sleep waves - at least in a healthy manner).
It doesn't solve the whole problem for me and, after some time with it, it doesn't look like it ever will, but you'll never catch ME discounting a good meal because it's not a banquet!
So if you resonated with anything here, you'll probably be happy with the book. If this sounds like nonsense to you, you will probably hate it.

The copy which was sent to me is definitely a pirated edition, as evident from the size of the paperback book, the quality of paper used and also the way it has been printed. It has all the stickers, etc of the original printer, but it is a pirated edition. You can get a similar copy on the footpaths of Kolkata at around 100/- each, hence feel cheated about the price and quality. Amazon please ensure quality of material supplied by your vendors.
