The split-sighting mirror ensures superior accuracy when navigating on distant landmarks. The baseplate has three scales for quick, easy plotting with a topographic map. Silicone feet provide positive grip on a map. The geared declination allows you to set and forget the declination for the area you are in, ensuring constant compensation for this variable when taking bearings. My dog and I are a search and rescue team and have to keep good grids to cover a designated area. Having a compass in hand is extremely important to keeping straight lines in the middle of a dense mountain and cover our area correctly. Not having a reliable tool put my life, my dog's life and the missing person's life at risk.
What's worse, I contacted Silva to get a replacement, but NEVER heard back from them. I just bought a replacement, SILVA as well, and I can already see myself using it for years to come.
The Silva's rotating bezel was quite stiff out of the box. I though it would loosen with time. It has not.
The declination setting is hard to see; the markings overlap and make accurate setting very difficult.
The declination setting drifts over time. This may be related to the very stiff bezel.
The 1/20 inch map scale is not accurate: it is printed on the case at an incorrect distance from the bottom edge (which is supposed to be "zero"), so all your readings are off.
I can not recommend this compass for map or field work.
They made one change in the new Silva that I don't like. They change the snap so that you h ave to turn the compass in your hands to open it. They should have stuck with the old closure. It's aggravating to me.
