Patty Griffin's much sought after Silver Bell is finally getting its official release. Silver Bell would have been Griffin's third album. It was recorded in 2000 but went unreleased by A&M Records. Despite its years of limbo the album spawned two huge hits for the Dixie Chicks, who covered both 'Top Of The World' and 'Truth #2' for their 2002 Home album. Newly mixed by legendary producer Glyn Johns, Silver Bell includes 14 original songs that were recorded back in 2000 at Daniel Lanois' Kingsway Studio in New Orleans. Emmylou Harris sings harmony on 'Truth #2.' Griffin's latest album, American Kid, was released in May.

I discovered her when she opened for The Dixie Chicks while she was supporting Flaming Red. Patty came out and tore the place up. I remember being slack jawed over her voice. I loved the Zeppelin influences in that music. It was loud, angry, beautiful, sweet, poppy; soft; aggressive...The girl simply delivered the goods.
When she followed Flaming Red up with folk album after folk album, I was disappointed. Yes, I know that's where her fan base is, so I didn't blame her. But I yearned for another Flaming Red.
Then I found out about the bootlegged Silver Bell. I was fortunate to get a copy on CD. I was stunned once again. It was even better than I had hoped. A much more complete record than Flaming Bell, and didn't have that disjointed feel that Flaming Red suffers from at times.
I cherished that bootlegged CD for many years. I appreciated some of the tracks covered by The Dixie Chicks. I appreciated the songs Patty released herself along the way on subsequent albums.
But when I heard that THIS was coming out...officially?!? Oh my yes.
I've owned this on MP3 and CD. The vinyl is even more enjoyable. One of my desert island albums, for sure. If there is only one gripe, it's only that the ending of Top of the World seemed better on the bootlegged version. But that's all I have for gripes. Other than that, the world is a better place with this record having finally been released.
Otherwise, I'm finding I prefer Silver Bell in its unofficial form, messy and clippy and thrown together by god knows who though it was. That version is the one that's written on my insides, so it will probably always be the one I prefer. The thing is the old Silver Bell contains the truly definitive edit of "Top of the World" with Patty's mother singing at the end, inexplicably trimmed by 50 seconds on this release (and previously poorly edited on "Impossible Dream"). The song really suffers atmospherically for it. Why anyone would twiddle knobs on that track for any reason boggles my mind, it was perfect.
I reiterate, this edition of Silver Bell is a must-have for Patty fans. But if you can creep around out there and get that old bootleg, you won't be sorry. It's better to have both!
To start with, the vinyl is of secondary quality, the pressing leaves this.... an lp that requires modification of the spinle hole in order to get somewhat close to center, IE: eccentric lp, then there's the sound quality. This record goes from pretty good to pretty bad on various tracks. How could the people in charge of this lp, let this happen???
This is another example of how people in the record industry, from masterers to producers to the pressing plants, let such a wonderful artist down, and her fans. Can we hope that some specialty audiophile label can work their majic on this one?? I hope so.
5 stars for content, 2 stars for sonics.
Things start off on a slightly harsh note, with the intense, smoldering rock tune "Little God." It's definitely not the typical Patty Griffin type song, and yet I thought the defiant tone of this song made for a perfect opening tune to this eclectic set of songs. Amongst this batch are, in my opinion, some of the finest songs that Patti Griffin has written and recorded. And that's a lot of fine music over the past two decades. When she puts her heart and soul into a song, the magical, expressive voice carrying the day, I can't think of any other contemporary vocalist who can move me to tears, or puts a lump in my throat like she does. This woman is a true musical treasure
The CD clocks in at nearly one hour, and not a minute is wasted. Hard to believe that this impressive album remained unreleased for so many years. Get it!
For those who have heard the Internet version, this version will be a bit startling at first, but if you're like me, you'll come to prefer it. It's much cleaner and has some very good musicianship on each song.
My two favorite tracks are "Silver Bell" and "Little God", but the album stands out as one of Patty Griffin's best albums. I highly recommend it.

Her more recent offerings are very good, but [again in my opinion] are not as good as this.
If you are into this sort of thing give Lori Mckenna go [you wont be disappointed].
