Astrud Gilberto found fame with her contributions to 1964's classic Getz/Gilberto album, which spawned an instant standard in the hit single "The Girl from Ipanema." From there, she went on to fill many LPs with her winningly hesitant, longing vocal style; this disc collects 25 tracks cut between 1965 and 1970 for Verve. Among them are early versions of a number of Brazilian standards by the likes of Antonio Carlos Jobim ("How Insensitive," "Once I Loved") and Luiz Bonfa ("The Gentle Rain," "Tristeza"). "Fly Me to the Moon" and the Bricusse-Newley "Who Can I Turn To" fit the mood perfectly. Throughout, Gilberto is aided by lush, thoughtful arrangements, including one by Gil Evans on "Berimbou." This entry in the Silver Collection series is an excellent introduction to one of Brazilian pop's most emblematic voices. --Rickey Wright

more wonderful sambas and bossa novas. She has a unique voice so light and soft it's hard to imagine her as a contemporary of Sinatra,Bennett,Ella, artists that can really belt them out. Her interpretations are of the highest caliber. She knows just how to put it. Very Cool. Relaxing, yet stimulating. Understated with professional aplomb. The cd is 25 songs long which makes it quite a deal for folks like me. Also recommended Getz/Gilberto which contains The Girl From Ipanema &Quiet Night with Quiet Stars...the dream continues. Check out Bebel Gilberto's All in One just great!too.

"What was I to say? What can one say, when a love affair is over?"
et surtout la poignante "gentle rain":
Gentle Rain
We both are lost
And alone in the world
Walk with me
In the gentle rain
Don't be afraid, I've a hand
For your hand and I
Will be your love for a while
I feel your tears as they fall
On my cheek
They are warm like gentle rain
Come little one you have me in the
World and our love will be sweet
Very sweet
Our love will
Be sweet very sad
Very sweet like gentle rain
Like the gentle rain
Like the gentle rain
avec Astrud, la tristesse devient une drogue douce, très douce. Et comme l'avait découvert André Malraux après le décès de Louise de Vilmorin, elle n'est même pas soluble dans le whisky. Mais s'il vous plait, donnez-m'en encore une dose.
