The collection consists of nineteen stories of inter-generational gay erotica, and within that group, there's intrigue, humor, obsession, and very frequently, extreme sexual heat. Those who like a bit of an edge to their erotica will definitely enjoy her stories "Emergency Room," "Crackhead Soup," and "Rough Road." On the other hand, there's some romance in "Where the Buffalo Roam" and "Mountain Music" which I'm sure many readers will also appreciate.
Ms. Potts shows off her immense talent and vast depth of creativity in stories such as "R&R" (which takes place behind enemy lines in the jungles of Viet Nam), "Hornbrook" (a beautifully-written historical piece) and my favorite, "Seducing the Hunter," which is related entirely through the dialogue of a seasoned writer who may be in over his head with the young man whose interest he has captured.
Overall, the collection is very inventive and many of the stories merit more than one re-reading. Very highly recommended.
On a side note, I was surprised to learn that the author is a woman and I know that while some circles of the gay community find things of this nature to be undesirable I wasn't put off by it. Some of the best gay erotica I've read has actually been penned by women. So needless to say I was double disappointed by the dullness and predictability of these vignettes. Which puzzles me because further research into the author revealed that she is in fact well established in gay erotica/fantasy circles.
This actually reminded me of the story of when I bought my first porno. I'd just turned 18 and was legally able to buy such things and I'd picked up a dvd that was on sale at the local record and book store. It was a porno but it wasn't the hardcore explicit exhibition that I'd thought it was going to be. It was a soft-core porn. I complained to one of my fellow queens about it and she informed me that some older men get into that sort of soft core low action type. This book is basically meant for those type of men.
Older men, don't read this on the commuter rail into work. Keep it beside your bed at night. It will provide a nice little fantasy for you to drift off to sleep to without causing you to reach for your Lipitor. ;)
