From the Author

Inspired by Gregory Maguire's Wicked, I set out to write the definitive historical adventurenovel of one of my favorite childhood cultural icons, rooted firmly in historyand full of actual details from the Gold Rush era. But that plan quicklyexpanded beyond my expectations, and I wound up exploring two different lives, richlydetailing the adventures of a father, his son, and their loves. This was a story I researched for more than a year, alwaysdiscovering - like the prospectors themselves - little nuggets of incrediblevalue. The Gold Rush era was full of tales that I just couldn't pass up. Unbelievablefeats of human endurance, of bravery, of self-sacrifice, and yes - terribly crueltyas well. The history of those times was replete with larger-than-life villains setoff against ordinary mortals doing the extraordinary. They were the true heroesof the age, an age that helped forge America into the power it would become.
And yes, there were monsters back then as well. Native mythsreplete with elusive beasts that I couldn't help but weave into the heart of mystory, intertwining the destiny of these fearsome forces with Smithsonianagents determined to map the unknown - and with the fate of my hero himself.

This is my favorite novel, the one that was the most fun towrite. The one I look back on and shake my head because I doubt I could matchthe intensity with which the material took hold of my soul.  Probably because it consumed me so thoroughly- surprising me along the way, wrenching my own heart even as I wrote scenes atonce uplifting and tragic, and as I explored the entire life of a man caught inthe tide of amazing events.

I can only hope that you dear readers also get equally caughtup in this historical adventure. That you strap yourselves onto the dogsled, feel the bitter wind in your hair, hear the over-eager yelping of the dogs, grabhold of the icy handles - and just enjoy the ride.
