“Silver Jack” comprises old folk and country songs from before the modern folk and country eras. Some of these songs are familiar. A few originate with the Carter Family. The title song is a cowboy song with a familiar theme—a wise guy wanders into camp.
“The Girl I Left Behind” is another familiar theme, which runs throughout various folk traditions. A young man and a maiden fall in love. He asks her permission to go out and make his fortune. Ultimately, he falls into a life of gambling and dissipation. Then he gets a letter from home.
These are primarily bluegrass arrangements, with some of the sweeter songs arranged for piano and mandolin.
Dean Rathje: voices, guitars, banjo, mandolin, dobro, piano, bass.
