Jerome Mysteries Series – Book Two
The mountains near Jerome, Arizona, guard a secret … an unsolved mystery that intertwines a young girl’s future, an old man’s past, and the fate of a teenager’s life.
Beneath the ghost town that clings to Cleopatra Hill, a labyrinth of abandoned mine tunnels hides a vein of silver ore mixed with pure gold—a silver lode. Decades ago, the silver lode’s discovery led to murder. Will more murders follow?
Historian Paul Russell is at risk of losing his job, and the woman he loves, Marty Greenlaw. He doesn’t have time to chase legends and ghost stories. But when a student drops clues to a 70-year-old case on his desk—a case connected to the silver lode—Paul seizes the chance to work with Marty and win her back.
Marty loves Paul but feels she cannot marry him. When she learns finding the silver lode can save a dying child, guilt from her little sister’s death resurfaces. Marty agrees to delve into the mine’s history.
As Paul and Marty’s search deepens, suspicious deaths occur. When Paul’s son disappears, the case becomes personal.
Will they find the truth in time to save Paul’s son and the little girl? And before greed triggers more crime? Will they survive to build a future together?

About the author

Award-winning author Suzanne J Bratcher, Ph.D. is the recipient of numerous awards for her fiction, including the Genesis Award, the Angel Award, and the coveted Selah Award. She delights in writing contemporary mysteries woven with romance and sprinkled with history. The majestic, magical Southwest inspires her stories. Her Jerome mysteries trilogy, set in the real town of Jerome, Arizona, includes The Copper Box, The Silver Lode, and The Gold Doubloons. Her Four Corners Folklore Fantasy series began with Kokopelli's Song (New Mexico). She is now hard at work on Tommyknocker's Gold (Colorado). She is continuing her non-fiction writing with Starting with Setting: A Different Way to Imagine a Novel.
Suzanne was a third grader who wanted to grow up to be Louisa May Alcott, a high schooler who wanted to grow up to be Mary Stewart, a college student who realized she couldn't support herself on five cents a word, an English teacher who started seven but never never finished one novel, an English teacher and mother who wrote poetry, an English professor who wrote about teaching writing, and a retiree who wrote mystery novels. Now she is a novelist with MS who writes more slowly than before.
She lives in Prescott Valley, Arizona, where she watches the sun come up over Mingus Mountain. When she’s not writing or reading, she enjoys playing with her granddaughter, laughing at her rescue cat, and piecing fabric scraps into colorful quilts. I loved the introduction of characters that put me on the track of the main suspect.
I have been to Jerome and was intrigued by it at that time. It was a pleasure to read this story interwoven with the history of Jerome.
I was given an advance copy of this book to read, but a purchased copy is now on my Kindle, and I plan to read it AGAIN!
Good job, Ms. Bratcher!
