The book itself had better pacing than the previous books, though all the characters are still weaker than they should be, meaning completely un-hero-like. I'm not sure why anyone would take any of them seriously to run a major operation to save the know universe as there's gotta be better people up to the task. But, sadly, apparently not in this universe.
I still don't take Sabina serious as an ex assassin, she's just to weak and whiny and doesn't fight that well, and is too caring about feelings to have ever been a killer with decades of experience. Gergahl is still pretty weak for a demon, but he was better in this book.
The ending in the last third of the book pulled through, and since there's only one other book to finish the series I'll buy it and hope it was all worth the read. It would be nice for the final book to actually be a 5 star read, but I highly doubt it as the progression of the characters and story hasn't been too impressive so far, so fingers crossed.
I love this book. Instead of drolly wandering into Happily Ever After as the series progresses, the characters experience the consequences regarding the events and changes in their lives, be it positive or negative. One of the most interesting things to me is the complete 180 - and almost complete switch - of Sabina and Maisie's personalities (that's all I'll say). No one catches a break, and everyone has to face their destinies. The book does not feel like a finale lead-up in the slightest, and is such an exciting read. There is a shocking twist at the end (okay, there are some in the middle, too), but it was completely necessary for the story line.
I am anxious for the release of Blue-Blooded Vamp in July to find out how everything turns out in the Sabina Kane universe.

**I pre-ordered this book well before being given the early review opportunity.
I am an avid reader of the Sabina Kane series. However, this particular installment, felt like a stepping stone to the next book. There were a few slow spots and some pages fillers. The plot felt like it was scattered and all over the place at times. I did however, love the evolution for the series. I didn't start to get really glued to the story until three-fourths of the way through it. That's when things started to heat up.
Even with my disappointments, I still enjoyed most of the story and read the entire book. If the last parts of the book are any indication of how the next book in the series will go, I can't wait to read it. I sense Sabina's next journey will make all her past journeys look like a cake walk.
I highly recommend this book to fellow dark urban fantasy readers and I look forward to reading the next book in this series Blue-Blooded Vamp Due out 6/1/2012.
I also recommend:
Tangled Threads (Elemental Assassin, Book 4)
Shadow City (Horngate Witches)
Pale Demon (The Hollows, Book 9)
Queen of Shadows (A Novel of the Shadow World)
One Grave at a Time: A Night Huntress Novel

Having finally got rid of her grandmother you'd think that Sabina's life would be a lot easier now and to some extent it has been.Read more
