Product Description

Style: Fortress 3 | Color: FT03B

As SilverStone engineers started working on the third model for the Fortress series, they had contemplated on the future of computer chassis and ways to improve it for home/office integration. So the Fortress FT03’s design goal was to simply give back as much user space as possible by reducing chassis depth to unprecedented level. The engineers also wanted to accomplish the change in design without compromises to the chassis’s ability in accommodating upper mainstream components. Traditional computer chassis designs take up desktop room by not only their physical footprint, but they also require additional space for cable connections. With the FT03, there are no such restrictions because its beautiful, 2.5mm thick, sand-blasted and anodized aluminum outer shells have no cable connectors to be found on all four sides, which frees up tremendous amount of desktop real estate for its users.

I've been toying with this itx build for over a month now. I've modified the drive cage and DVD bracket to allow for a Push/Pull radiator setup at the bottom. By removing the DVD bracket, or simply folding/cutting a small flange on the bracket, you can fit a corsair H80 radiator with a normal 120mm pull fan on top, perhaps a 140mm pull if it has 120mm mounts. I'm using a 620 Kuhler, but I've measured and know other users with the H80 setup. You'll have approximately 90mm of headroom from the 140mm fan at the bottom of the case to the lowest memory module on your motherboard.

I have easily managed to place a full ATX power supply inside this case, allowing me to forego the restrictions of an SFX supply; e.g., limited selection, relatively noisey 80mm fan in sfx PSUs, etc. I placed a Seasonic X560 in this case without drilling or cutting anything (see user photos). SilverStone should have made some incredibly simple design decisions (removing a flange/adding screw holes) that would allow for ATX PSUs right out of the box. It's a simple user mod, however. My PSU measures W150 x L160 x H86 mm and does not impede on the video card.

Absolute max video card measurements:
--Metric--
Length: 257.12 mm, or, if you remove the fan filter clip at the bottom of the case, 263.5 mm
Height: 133.35 mm, or 152.4 mm if you remove the DVD bracket.
--Standard--
Length: 10 1/8", or 10 3/8" by removing fan filter clip
Height: 5 1/4", or 6" w/o DVD bracket

The panels are thick metal, and the steel frame is sturdy, no flexion under the weight of my ATX power supply.

The SilverStone Air Penetrator fans are not a quiet line of fans, especially true as they slightly increase RPM.

Despite the four stars, this is one of the best (if not the best) air-cooling cases money can buy because of its thermodynamic design and shear aesthetic beauty derived from simplicity. It's a high performance case that isn't outlandish in appearance.

Pros:

-Extremely sturdy chassis construction
-Very nice aluminum body with nearly all exposed surfaces made of aluminum or steel (very little plastic)
-For air cooling, there are less than a handful of cases that can beat this case in terms of component temperatures
-Very quiet, but NOT silent (a lot of people have unrealistic expectations)
-The easily removable dust filters on all intakes make this case extremely easy to maintain
-This is the USB 3.0 Updated version: includes some things that weren't in the first FT-02 cases - standard AP181 fans (no removable fan grill now, so fits a 12in HD5970 graphics card), black sleeving on the fan cables (except for top exhaust fan), HDD drive trays all have 2.5 in mounting holes for ssd's
-Everything else not mentioned here or in the cons section

Cons:

-Very Heavy, difficult to transport when fully loaded without bear-hugging it (no handles - the price to pay for good looks)
-GPU cooler specific - this case works best with a blower type heatsink, the twin fan designs will fight against the natural airflow of the case (still viable, but not ideal). Heatsinks that with fins that aren't parallel to the case's natural airflow will render the heatsink solution near useless! (excess heat will build up) AKA ASUS direct CU II (gtx 680 version) will not work, but MSI Twin Frozr will be fine.

This is the first computer I've decided to build all by myself, over the years I've seen many cases and worked on hardware with them but I have never opened a case from the original box and put a build together from scratch.

This has got to be the best looking case I've ever seen. The sides are steel and front is aluminum. It feels sturdy throughout. It may be prone to scratches but if you take care of it, it should be fine. On the left side is a window, it's nice but I wish it wasn't so low as it reveals cables. With a ATX board I don't know of a way to avoid having the cables being hidden with this case but I did my best it doesn't look bad at all.

The actual build, it was easy to get the sides off, all you have to do is take off the plastic top cover, (which contrary to others I think it's pretty solid) then there is a lever you pull and just pull the panel up. It's pretty tight in there but I like that it makes the build feel like a game. It was my first build so I don't know how hard installing a board is compared to other cases but I had to add 3 extra mounting points and put the screws in a specific order. The screw by the PSU first, then the screw by the I/O panel second then the rest however. It was difficult because I didn't have a magnetic screwdriver. All the fan cables and such are a perfect length and come with ties to keep it neat.

The most difficult part was mounting the SSD's to the other side. There's two little clip things that you can slide one side of the drive in to hold it, then you put 2 screws in the other side. It was so difficult to fit my tiny screwdriver in those tight spaces, it's possible but it's hard no matter how experienced you could be.
